I really like my Sig P220. I bought the .22 kit from Bud's when they had it on sale, then sent in for the .45 slide. It's never given me any problems, but I've only put a few hundred rounds of .45 through it so far. I've put several bricks of .22 through it, though. That conversion is a great idea.
My favorite is my XD45. No question it is a great gun in that it is dependable as gravity, is accurate and does everything that it is supposed to do very well.
That said, no matter how fantastic plastic is, there is not the joy of ownership like a 1911.
I've just completed the obligatory 200 round break-in of my Kahr TP45 without a single issue. I guess that I would be being unfaithful to my new constant companion if I said anything else.
Since the 1911 isn't included, I'm going to vote for the XD .45 Service model. Sure, it's polymer (and I generally prefer all steel guns for full sized pistols)....but it has a similar grip angle to the 1911 and a grip safety too. Mine proved to be extremely reliable and accurate.
Sig P220 followed by the XD45ACP...The Sig shoots better, handles better and looks better, but the XD is more resilient, still shoots and handles very well and is a helluva lot less expensive. Either way, both are top notch weapons IMHO.
