Location
In a Los Angeles coffin.
I'll be in TX (DFW-Austin-San Antonio-and other spots) for a week and want to take advantage of the ranges and gun shops...but more gun shops so I can be a kid in the candy store.

So what do you Texans recommend? Do you have a favorite?

Thanks.

Houston Area: My top pick's would be...

Carter's Country (4 locations) (for the serious hunter, I think the I-10 location is the best)
Jim Pruett's Guns and Ammo (HWY 290 & Huffmeister) (fun stuff)
Fountain Firearms (HWY 6 & Bissonet) (fun stuff and hunting, sometimes they have smoking deals on used guns)

For a range, I recommend checking out American Shooting Center at George Bush Park around HWY 6 and Westiemer. One of the nicest outdoor ranges I've ever been to. Killer trap and skeet set up!

All of these stores have web pages with directions and contact info, just Google the names and they'll pop up.

Austin area:

McBrides is my favorite in that area. They are very helpful and have a large selection.

Now if you are hitting the I-35 corridor may I suggest The Bunker in San Marcos. Not as large of selection as McBrides(they arekinds of small), but they are a class 3 and a hoot to talk to. Just don't interrupt them watching Red Dawn :)

In San Antonio Dury's Guns is ok. Sometimes it is hard to get a employee to help you but other than that not to bad.

and that's my two cents.

DFW area: The Bullet Trap in Plano is pretty nice. Indoor range with rentals and ammo.

Two of those three I think are the worst gun shops in the Houston area. Specifically, Carter's is way overpriced, and the service is indifferent, except for the one on U.S. 59 South in Stafford (and not just because of the cute girl working the register). I would actually rather shop at Gander Mountain than most of the Carter's. As for Fountain, I went there looking for a Savage 93R17 because Savage's web site said they were a dealer and it seemed that the guys working in there didn't seem too interested in my business, I was all but ignored. I walked out not buying anything.

Pruett's is pretty good, especially if you're into black rifles. Texas Tactical Gear is very good too, though they mostly do gun shows.

Hands down my favorite gun shop in the Houston area is Tomball Gun & Pawn. I think they have the best prices in town. I live in central Houston and it's worth the drive. They are the friendliest, most knowledgable and most helpful bunch of guys I've met. Plus they had Black Hills ammo at fair prices during the great rush earlier this year.

Gun Master in Plano is also pretty cool. They don't have a range though. If you pm when you get here maybe we can go to my favorite range in Greenville called APG. We can go shoot some black guns with 30 round mags. Don't kow how often you get to do that in Lakerland.

Dury's, Don's guns, & Pronto Pawn on perrin beitel have good prices on guns in San Antonio.

Avoid Nagel's unless you're looking for something used. They were one of the worst dealers I'd witnessed or heard about on here as far as price gouging amid all the crazyness - so much so that their employees would go out and buy up ammo from other stores.

I'll second McBrides Gun Store in Austin. Have a good selection and friendly and informative employees. Definiteley worth a stop if you're in the area.

Another vote for Tomball Pawn, with an equal vote for Collectors Firearms on Richmond - prices aren't Tomball Pawn's, but their selection is pretty darn good, plus there's lots of stuff to gawk at.

McBrides in Austin is the best in the State. I travel all over Texas for work, and stop at every gun store I see (I'm sick like that). McBrides has one of the best selections of used guns for great prices that I've seen in Texas. Their new guns can generally be bought at gun show prices. Bear in mind that they will work with you on the price a bit if they can... especially on the used guns.

Nagles in San Antonio is fine if you are a lotto winner. They have a huge selection, mostly because everything is waaaaaay overpriced.

Be sure you can get to a gunshow if you're staying over a weekend.

If you're in the Dallas area in september, the largest DFW shows I've been to are the Dallas Market Center and Big Town. The ones in Ft. Worth are a little smaller than the other two shows. Austin has one every third weekend of the month.

Chadick's in Terrell, about 30 miles east of Dallas on I 20. He has primarily high and very high grade double barrel shotguns, especially Parkers.

In all honesty, the gun stores I've seen in TX are hardly any different than those in SoCal. Don't come here expecting vast showrooms and endless selection...at least around Dallas.

I've wanted to go to Collectors Firearms but haven't made it down there yet. Sounds interesting.

If you like used/collector guns and are in Dallas, Jackson Armory is amusing. I've taken a few people there and most have enjoyed it. It isn't a huge shop but they have some interesting stock.

There is a Beretta Gallery in Dallas. Not sure if that's your thing.

If you are looking for stuff you may not see every day in SoCal, Military Gun Supply in Ft Worth is hit or miss but might be OK.

From a SoCalers perspective Cabela's, Gander Mountain, and so on can be a bit of a trip. It's corporate retail, sure, but still not what you normally see in Clipper Town. If you go to Cabela's, try to go to the Ft Worth store.

I'll put in another good word for McBrides, always very knowledgeable, friendly staff, and decent prices. The only thing I can say bad about them is that they are so popular that it is sometimes hard to get to the counter. They also have a pretty decent selection of knives, though small.

To tell you the truth, there isn't much difference between So. Cal and Dallas...

Tell me about it. I love telling the locals, too, especially after they badmouth their sister Greater Metro Area. Doesn't matter which locals, by the way... it chaps the Dalasites as bad as the SoCalies, and vice versa. :)
