What's your primary all purpose hunting knife ?

I have to say that my Mora Companion is great, always in my pack. Carry my Ka-bar (USMC issue) on my belt and a Spyderco Sage in my pocket. All great knives. I got a Puma SGB Wolverine that I'm going to give a chance this year.

S30V really holds a fantastic edge but is not easy to sharpen. My esee blades are awesome and ARE easy to sharpen in the field. I carry both.

I have all sorts of knives and even "kits" of them for everything from the field to the table including saws and such.

That said my "all purpose" would be a leatherman wave. I always have it and I know it will do the field dressing job fine as I have used it several times before. Not my first pick for cleaning animals but it will do many other things that a normal hunting knife cannot do.

I prefer a lightweight folder for carrying with me in the field. I mainly use this for field dressing. It seems to change from year to year. But I like a large Case trapper. Sometimes are carry a buck 110. But whatever is sharp and can fit in my pocket usually goes with me.

However, when it is time to skin and butcher. I have a few other knives that I like to use. I have a Knives of Alaska fixed blade skinning knife, that I really like for detail work. And I go for my Gerber 5 inch drop point fixed blade for pulling the loins out and for clearing the pelvis cavity.

For me it's not so much about brand...but rather the shape that I am after. I find that I will sit down and sharpen up my knives before I skin and butcher. But I too can appreciate higher quality steel. You have to pay big $$ for the better steel and you will probably like the edge better and spend less time sharpening. But you can certainly get by with average steel.

For the last 3 years I've been using my Bark River gunny with CPM S35VN steel. That's a lot of deer and not one of them complained.
