"...the handgun is the most challanging at which to become proficient..." That's true. Using a .45 for bullseye shooting, you're holding 2 pounds out in an un-natural manner. You use muscles when you shoot, that don't get used for anything else. Upper body tone is required to shoot handguns well. That's why Olympic class shooters also do weights. Every type of firearm uses different muscle groups and technique.
