I don't generally hunt what I cannot eat, so the closest I come to varmint hunting is walking up jacks in a pretty desolate area of prairie (easy to find my way back to the truck because the only tree on a couple thousand acres is a handy landmark). Then again, I think jacks are pretty good eating, so this is really just hunting to me. I tried using a scoped .22, but either they did not stop until they were in the next county or they would go 100 yards and settle down next to some sage brush I could not distinguish them from with a 4X scope. Mostly I use an el cheapo Maverick loaded with steel 2s.
I do plan on hunting rabbits and jacks with my .30-06 elk rifle this fall. I discovered a gallery load that launches a 118 grain cast bullet at about 1600 FPS, does about an inch at 100 yards, and hits within an inch of my deer load without any change of scope dial. I figure at 100 yards rabbits for sure won't really even know I am there until the bullet hits them (since this should be supersonic to 125+ yards). Jacks might start getting nervous, but if I can spot them and draw a bead, it should be lights out before they ever really get ready to run.
