First, we're going to start with Pachmayr. That is a name many do not think about when it comes to talented gunsmiths. Today, many simply associate Pachmayr as a company that makes handgun grips and recoil pads for rifles and shotguns.

But that wasn't always the case.

Frank Pachmayr worked out of Pachmayr Gun Works located Los Angeles, CA and he was a master craftman when it came to 1911 pistols. We would make some of the most amazing competition capable guns you can think of and actually designed and made the grips and recoil pads that are being sold to this day.

Frank passed at 90 years old in 1997 and was buried in Inglewood. The location of his workshop in Los Angeles is now an apartment building.

Another master gunsmith was Armand Swenson out of Seattle, WA and later moved to Fallbrook, CA. Amand invented the modern combat 1911 that we know today. He came up with things like the ambidextrous safety. He was world famous for putting Smith & Wesson K-Frame adjustable rear sights on 1911s. It was his idea to apply metal checkering square beveled mag wells His signature feature though was the square trigger guard.

Amand retired in 1990 and passed away in 1995.

The last master gunsmith we're looking at today is Bob Chow of San Francisco, CA. Bob was a renowned gunsmith for 1911s and accuracy jobs on revolvers. He helped pioneer many of the features we see in carry gun today and his work on guns like Colt Pythons is amazing. He really could make a silk purse of a sow's ear.

Bob retired in the early 1980s and sadly shed his mortal coil in 2003.

Alas, California is now known as being home to some of the most draconian gun control laws in the country and any firearm innovation has long fled the Golden State. But there once was a time when some of the most talented and skilled hands crafted some amazing pieces of firearms art.

Also the late Roy Weatherby who was originally from Kansas but got his start in firearms in California. His company that was started on wildcatting cartridges and developing his own line of rifles was founded in California in 1945. Located there for at least 70 years until fairly recently, when they made the move to Wyoming.

Weatherby, Bain & Davis (They may still be around), Kings in Pasadena, Armalite, AMT... there were tons of innovators in CA...

Leatherslap started in Big Bear as one of the predecessors of combat shooting sports.

Kim Rhode, one of the most decorated Olympic shooters, still lives here.

New York, Connecticut, Virginia... all are areas with a rich history of gun making and innovation that have been ruined by the same poison.

Sadly, much like every state; a few “woke” urban areas rule with their insanity the majority of the rest of the state’s area, which is rural.

Stay safe.

I think that Swenson used the S & W j frame sight on the 1911, I did one on my Colt Combat Commander back in the 70's, the nice thing is you took out the rear sight and milled it and the top of the slide to take the j frame sight. Very clean installation.
a good friend of mine sent him a nice prewar 1911a1 to do a complete rework on. It was one of the last shortening jobs he did as the Steel frame commander was already shorter. I think it took maybe 5 years to get back but it would put 7 shots into 1.250" at 25 yards if one did their job.

Your post took me back in time when there were some great gunsmiths and an ongoing gun culture in California versus the current anti-gun environment they have there today.

I use to buy 1911 parts from King's Gun Works many years ago and probably had a set of Pachmayr grips for most every gun I ever owned. Not long after I picked up this Colt Combat Commander customized by Colt's Gun Shop, I gave it the Pachmayr "Treatment" with their grips, mainspring housing, and magazine. All three are still going strong over 40 years later!

Nice write up OP! Right on the money.

San Diego, CA lost some great ones. Terry Tusey, a phenomenal 1911 mechanic moved to Nevada. Tim Lafrance, known for his work with automatic weapons, could make absolutely anything, got out of the business. Mike Bay, former SEAL, a lesser known, but phenomenal 1911 mechanic left California.

Tussey is still in business just outside of Carson City and has been there for many decades

I have a Pachmayr custom .357 when they used to do a package on S&W 66's. Had it done in the late 80's, early 90's. Very nice work! Carried it for decades.

Hollywood Reloading was there making great reloading gear as was Star back when. Buck knives was also in CA till they were driven to Idaho a few years ago.

Sad situation.

It's amazing how East Coast politicians and carpetbaggers ruined the greatest state in the Union!

It's this reason why I hate ALL politicians, no matter what you think, they're ALL bad! I wish we could do away with them and have as little government as possible!

The biggest problem is people, as a mob, you can't get them to listen and they usually go with feelings. They don't think for themselves, just what the mob wants.

As a single person, you can talk to them and get them to think for themselves. You can reason with them and get them to understand that the sky isn't falling.

But we mix in politicians and mob rules and now we're stuck with what we have. If you think that they can be voted out, you know that you're fooling yourself!

It's to bad that these companies and people decided to leave CA and not stay and fight. Having them here and in the fight is a big motivator for people to see.

I feel sorry for the people that are stuck there, but California deserves what it's getting ... all things come around and those that take and take and take end up getting taken.
California became what it became because people moved to it. The place was once home to a population that elected Ronald Reagan and even passed a proposition to have the state enforce immigration law. After WWII and up until the 90s, California was the American dream. Good jobs, fantastic weather, affordable housing, etc... people moved there in droves. People from other states.

And that "people stared moving to it" started back with the Spanish explorers and Conquistadors. CA was still gun friendly and not as wacky even in the 80s when I lived next door in NV. Went to many sporting clay shoots in CA, duck hunts in the rice fields, etc.

Roberti-Roos Assault Weapons Control Act of 1989.

California started becoming Anti-Gun with Ronald Reagan's signage of the Mulford Act in 1967 and George Deukmejian's signage of the Roberti-Roos Assault Weapons Control Act of 1989. Sadly, both of them as Republicans started the legal path for the gun control Democrats are goign crazy with.

Damn straight! Republicans have passed some of the worst gun control!

They aren't our friends, as soon as people realize this the better. It's just a different wolf in sheep's clothing.

Why we have to settle for the lesser of the two evils is beyond me. Why can't we have someone that doesn't give us double talk when it comes to protecting the 2nd Amendment?!

Hogue grips were also made in California (maybe they still are). The Hogue family were customers of mine when I lived there.

There is a difference between Republicans and Pro-gun people, although most pro-gun people are republicans. Unfortunately there is not a difference between Democrats and anti-gun people.
