I was at the gym this morning working on the speed bag when I had a thought about situational awareness.
Some background; Not many people are there at 0545, and the gym is in an industrial park. The speed bag is in the corner of the aerobics room. This means I have a wall to my right and one directly in front of me (where the backboard is attached). Call the backboard wall 12 and the sidewall 3. The door to enter is at 9 and can be seen peripherally even while moving around the bag (never put my back directly towards the door). The big problem is the door at 6 o'clock, about 40 feet away.
The way I work out is to close both doors, put on a CD (Stevie Ray this morning) and work the bag for 10-15 minutes as a warm-up. Between the music, the sound of the bag, and getting lost in what I am doing I came to the conclusion that I am as close to condition white as I can get without putting my head in the ground.
I am not worried about the other members, or the area where the gym is in, and not many BG's are up at that hour. It is my natural inclination to stay in yellow, but here I am in a situation where I have rendered myself oblivious to my surroundings.
I will continue to workout like this because I do not feel the need to be especially vigilant, considering the circumstances. An inner city Y at 10 at night would probably be different.
So here’s the question…where/when do you find yourself in condition white, due to a conscious decision on your part?
One caveat, I DO make an effort to move around and use peripheral vision, just as training, and occasionally stop and take a look around. But that door at 6………
