When do you HAVE to be in Condition White?

I was at the gym this morning working on the speed bag when I had a thought about situational awareness.
Some background; Not many people are there at 0545, and the gym is in an industrial park. The speed bag is in the corner of the aerobics room. This means I have a wall to my right and one directly in front of me (where the backboard is attached). Call the backboard wall 12 and the sidewall 3. The door to enter is at 9 and can be seen peripherally even while moving around the bag (never put my back directly towards the door). The big problem is the door at 6 o'clock, about 40 feet away.
The way I work out is to close both doors, put on a CD (Stevie Ray this morning) and work the bag for 10-15 minutes as a warm-up. Between the music, the sound of the bag, and getting lost in what I am doing I came to the conclusion that I am as close to condition white as I can get without putting my head in the ground.
I am not worried about the other members, or the area where the gym is in, and not many BG's are up at that hour. It is my natural inclination to stay in yellow, but here I am in a situation where I have rendered myself oblivious to my surroundings.
I will continue to workout like this because I do not feel the need to be especially vigilant, considering the circumstances. An inner city Y at 10 at night would probably be different.
So here’s the question…where/when do you find yourself in condition white, due to a conscious decision on your part?
One caveat, I DO make an effort to move around and use peripheral vision, just as training, and occasionally stop and take a look around. But that door at 6………:scrutiny:

About once a month, when I have the next day off I put earplugs in and pull the curtains shut for some serious recharging sleep.

Other than that it's pretty much yellow all the time. Heck, normally I sleep so light that if I leave the icemaker on in the freezer at night it'll wake me up when it dumps.

On White

When I'm asleep...No worries. 2 black Labs in the back yard will alert the
4 Collies in the house.(3 males) After bedtime...or if I'm not here, those docile, friendly Lassies morph into Cujo, and they're completely serious about their jobs. If you can get past those dogs...you're a better man than I am Gunga Din.

Yup. Sleep like a baby I do...

Cheers!

Ummmm........ making love... you're sort of concentrated real hard on something else right then!

You've never met some of my ex-girlfriends, then :uhoh:

Right now, it's my day off, it's mid-afternoon in a decent neighborhood, I've got two large dogs to alert me if anyone approaches the house, and if I should need it, I've got three guns within six feet of me. So yeah, I'm pretty much in white right now.

At work, I'm often in white and red at the same time.:scrutiny:
I'm devoting so much attention directly into the scope, and am very aware of what is or could be happening, pretty much red. However, everything else around me I tune out and treat in white.

Asleep, making love, and that's about it. 10 year old Cocker Spaniel will give it the old college try, but I don't think he'll be able to do a whole lot. Trying to get another dog now.

LOL it's funny you guys mention making love being condition white... when I was dating an ex back in high school I'd be in condition orange as her parents' room was above hers and my parents' room was next to mine. "Did you hear something?" haha

I think the only time I'm really in white is when I'm in the shower, can't hear/see anything outside of the bathroom. Oh and maybe when driving on a deserted highway

Baseball?

I spend a lot of time in white but I'm in yellow when I think I need to be. This might leave me open sometimes but it's a compromise.

Condition white? Only when unconscious.

Condition White is a state of mind and is not determined by whether there is a door in front, or behind you.

Condition white? When looking at the front sight on my rifle, a fuzzy bullseye 100 or 200 yards away. Most peaceful.

I thought about that the other night when I was in our new hot tub. It makes a fairly good racket. We are WAY off the beaten path. Live on a gravel road six miles from town. We have five dogs (one an outside roamer ) who patrols the property and barks at anything unusual or the odd visitor. We have four inside large dogs that make a racket.
The spa is right outside our master bedroom door, so even in the tub I am five steps from my AK and 92FS. I think I have enough early warning system to be able to relax and enjoy the tub.

But I found out that you need to be alert for signs of "things just aren't right". I was in condition white. - Wish I'd be at least yellow! You can't trust ANYBODY anymore.

Posting a long, involved reply on a gun board can tend to make you approach condition white. (Don't try anything, y'all, I'm keeping this short!)

I've found it is almost impossible to stay in condition yellow while tying a new hook on a fishing line. My concentration just closes right down on my thick fingers and that thin line!

THATS what I was looking for!!:D
Cameron Lamont Condition white? Only when unconscious. Condition White is a state of mind and is not determined by whether there is a door in front, or behind you.
What I consider to be Condition White is far from unconscious, just less than other waking moments.
I just felt that I was restricting my options, due to my present activity (Like Rickstir in his hot tub), and was wondering if others felt the same.
Standing Wolf has a point, but again I am weighing my potential threat from night Goblins against my location and the presence of my gym buddies…one of which is a LARGE state cop. He is as alert as I am, and any unknowns coming in would be scrutinized.
Unfortunately all we could use would be H2H or maybe some plates.......haven't figured out how to carry at the gym and not sure it would be a good idea anyway.

I think many folks come to the wrong conclusion that being in condition white is a bad thing and should be avoided at all costs. The reality is that it's acceptable to be in white as long as when doing so, you have taken measures that will alert you to a potential problem. For example, while asleep or just being a couch potato, have doors locked and the alarm on. Problems occur when people are unaware and oblivious in an environment where dangerous conditions could present themselves without warning. There are a variety of issues that demand concentration and that are more important than being "aware" so when that is the case, take extra steps to provide whatever early warning is needed.

Yes, if you've got good watch dogs you can usually relax, 'cause they're in yellow. It's just part of the deal they make with you.

The other night, something rattled my chain link fence pretty good late at night. The dogs and I both alerted. They ran to the back sliding doors, I grabbed a Glock and a Streamlight first. By the time I got back there, they were ready to play. I let them out and walked around with them, but they were totally relaxed. I checked the rest, just in case, but it was pretty clear it wasn't necessary. If anyone had been lurking in the shadows, both my dogs would have been chewing on him or at the very least snarling and barking.

It was probably the neighbor's idiot cat.

Ol' Badger

ROFLMAO! You should beware of those redheads, though---Laz and Lor might turn on you...you never know. Stay safe. Justin

Reading a book is my serious weakness (aside from the obvious sleep/sex things). You can't enjoy a piece of fiction without immersing yourself. My GF and I have a habit of stepping out to a public place (park, Starbucks) and reading together. Sometimes we bring our two macaws but I wouldn't call 'em guard-birds.

Just don't go for a walk with those redheads down a pier even if your a marine even in condition red! No telling what they have in store for you.

Years ago, I worked at a Y part-time. One day I was on the phone with Precor about our stationary bikes. I was on hold and bored. I began leafing through a catalogue. I was pretty deep into a description of some model die-casts when a voice screams to call 911. I just stood up and stepped out of the office. It was like waking up. A aerobics instructor is blabbing something at me. In one ear and out the other. I came back to reality when a kid came in bleeding. I shook myself to alert. There was a attacker outside with a knife. A kid was bleeding, the aerobics instructor was telling me to call 911 and I was beginning to process things. I picked up my GE and called dispatch to roll PD to me and send EMS. I was off duty and dressed for aerobics later. My duty weapon was outside locked in my Ramcharger. White is not good. The knife wielder was still there when the cavalry arrived. There were five unlocked doors to the gym.:cuss:
