My dad just traded for a Winchester 290 in "good" condition. The serial# is 407XXX. He was wanting to know when it was made and about how much it is worth.
Wasn't able to pin down the date but it would likely be in the late 60s to 1970. But actually date isn't significant to it's value. Assuming good condition the value would be $100 - $125. If by good condition you mean showing some wear, minor loss of bluing, marked up wood, and maybe a bit of rust somewhere the value would be sub $100. If good means all the bluing is still present, the wood isn't marked up, the barrel is shiny, and no rust at all the value could range up to $150, or $175 pristine. You dad must be the judge, but the value is in such a range that it doesn't matter a whole lot if your dad is happy with it.
He's on it...don't know what it dates to (they were only made for about a decade) but about $100-150.00USD would be a fair valuation for good, used condition (photos would help to narrow it down a bit).
