Some events seem almost light hearted upon reflection
Fred is played by OMC; Wilma by Charter Arms

Back in 1978, was late winter into spring and I was manager for a number of rental properties. Some of the buildings had morphed to a welfare client base. So each mother’s day I would be out and about collecting the rent. The area youth were very nice; often expressing concern for my car and my health. They even had a schedule of fees for their services—did I mention how they liked to play with knives when they talked to me? Oddly, fees were not an exact amount; rather they were an object—as in ‘gimme what’s in your pocket’ or ‘gimme your wallet’. Strange how they would not say the word ‘money’. Perhaps like ‘work’ it was a dirty word to them.

Back to ‘that day’ when 3 concerned fellers wanted their ‘fees’. Still ~12 feet between us in a wide hallway and I already hand my hand under my shirt on Fred (soon after this Fred would not leave the cave without Wilma), I told them that I had met with some of their like minded business friends a number of times before and we had all mutually agreed to waive my fees. Honestly, I always felt there was a bit of reluctance and even some negative feelings on their part. I noticed that though they spoke a form of English, they had trouble understanding me. Often our discussions would conclude with them throwing down their knives and gesticulating erratically and saying things concerning my parents and grandparents that they had no way of knowing about. They sometimes suggested I should do things which honestly I do not think are possible. These and other strange suggestions often continued as they walked away.

Anyways….these three thieves-in-training say something like ‘ya, well we are here now so now you do what we say’. They were shuffling closer to me as they spoke, pointing their blades at each other and their chests to emphasize we so I let Fred out to low ready and said ‘Fred don’t want to talk about this again. Drop the shinny’s and leave’. Two did and the third did when Fred made eye contact. Darned but they had what to say about my parentage as they got themselves to leaving. Go figure that they would be so interested in my family tree.

Well, now I figure that the area people’s know that I am not alone when they see me by myself.
The next month I notice two large dudes sitting on the steps as I park and walk over to the building. Wilma is in my left vest pocket that I put the car keys in—my hand is still in that pocket though not on the keys. As I get about 12 feet away, all of us having maintained strong eye contact
Lefty says: you held down on a brother…
I says: ya, what, do they want their cutlery back?
Lefty starts to say something when righty chimes in smiling with: my aunt likes you
I says: you look like you belong to Betty’s table
He laughs and says that’s her and he will have a talk with them boys.
I was never bothered in that building again.

A few years later I met up with one of them again….but that’s another story.

Yeah, yeah, so what happened when you met the guy afew years later ? C'mon, keep it coming.
I'll be sitting here waiting !!!! :D

That was most likely the best "entertainment" I will have all day.;)I am glad that Fred and Wilma were available and on your side. As the rest are saying, more stories will be appreciated.

ahhh.....that's my story and i'ma sticking to it.

Thank you all for the favorable comments.

Betty was apartment dweller head-of-house in a unit on the second floor. Clyde, the right stoop sitter, is one of her brothers sons....strong family resemblance and I called it right.
Rental business became furniture sales as the years progressed and I know 3 generations of that family.
The state put a revolving door on a prison for the wordy dude. the two others.....well, Clyde had a talk with his distant relatives and they didn't play much b-ball that summer--no noticeable scars and it ain't like he crippled them; just that they limped for quite a while. How I met up with one of them later is that he started crashing at Betty's and we were OK with each other-it wasn't him I sighted on. Fast forward to the present: he's a good customer ( remember-i sell furniture) and family man. In the cosmic scheme of things everyone is entitled to one mistake. And one mistake needn't define the rest of your life.

Betty was apartment dweller head-of-house

Got it. I thought with Fred and Wilma, Betty might have been a reference to another firearm (Betty and Barney).

just that they limped for quite a while

Sounds like a cheap lesson, that might keep them away from real pain later on. If they're smart enough to learn something.

one mistake needn't define the rest of your life

It sometimes does. I'm glad it didn't here. Sometimes you catch a break you really need--even if you don't deserve it.

Thanks for the story.

reporting the incident

my conversation with the police by payphone to report this incident went pretty much like those before and those after:
---this is the xxxx police department
i want to report an attempted hold up.
---who are you
(insert my info)
---was anyone injured
no
---where are you--what happened
it happened 10 minutes ago at xx xxx street. i was leaving the building and 3 youth blocking the hallway told me that my money should be theirs. they had knives and were advanced towards me and i pointed my gun at them...
---you have a gun---did you shoot them
no, i repeat, no one was injured-no shots were fired. they saw my gun and left.
---can you describe them
(i do)

sometimes they will offer to send a unit to get a signed statement or ask me to come down to the station--i always decline. waste of time to press charges even if they find them. and if they never bother me again and perhaps tell their friends to leave me be---i'm happy.
the police always say that they will be in touch with me and they never were. not even once.

some conversations with the police even ended with them saying:
---if nothing was stolen and no one was injured...why are you calling the police?'' and i reply:
'if some one else reports about a white man with a gun in that area at least now you have my story to go with what they may say.'
---anything else....no....good by.

conversations like this often leave me wondering what those words on their cruisers " To Serve And Protect" really mean.

"To Serve and Protect" other part is "Our own interests." in quite a few areas.

Kinda sad here. Crime, no room in jails, and 30 minutes to an hour to get a cop on scene for anything. There was a shooting in a normally quiet area and it was 45 minutes before anything showed up.

Some of these people steal cars, get arrested, and are let free to steal more. Only way you stay there for more than 30 minutes is murder a few people, it's that bad. Plus I never see any County or city police anymore, sometimes a State Trooper getting on the highway. Even the Motorcycle cop for my area is gone...

waste of time to press charges even if they find them.

I have to disagree.

They may never bother you again but because you did not press charges they are free to rob and victimize others. Many may not agree with me, but I believe that those who permit criminals to get away with their crimes bear some of the guilt for the future crimes those criminals commit -- crimes they could have prevented but chose not to when they chose not to press charges.

It is never a waste of time for the strong to protect the weak.

I believe that it's there to make them feel better, that's why I carry. I'm responsible for me & mine

If you look, very few departments have the words 'To protect and serve' on their cruisers anylonger.

They're law enforcement, and any protecting and/or serving that is done is done because the individual officer is a decent human being.

It's not departmental policy.

Nicely written Claude.

By the way Claude, what's 'OMC'?
