On public land, you need to be careful when there is a lot of shooting going on close by. When I was young (perhaps 16), I was hunting with my trusty 243 and had a guy shooting above me on a bench (mountain top). I had not seen this hunter prior to hearing his very load shots.... very loud usually means close by and perhaps pointed in your direction.... Anyway, to make a long story short, I saw the whitetail buck moving toward me and the shots kept on coming. I hid behind a tree... large one. That deer finally fell within 30 yards of me and yes, that hunter was still racking off the shots. Pretty poor shooting actually. Don't recall how many shots this guy fired, but it was in the 10-12 range.
Personally, I don't think AR's and similar rifles have any place in the field for hunting even if they are "legal". Fun to shoot and all that, but not the best choice. Great anti-fodder that can be used against hunting. I know a lot of people disagree with me on this point about rifle choice.
