I am looking for the Definitions of the type of firearms that can be used in legal hunting in Texas. For instance a Ar-15 can it be used in hunting for sport. I have tried to look at the State of Texas Website but no luck
Thanks

Technically, if you can get your Baby Browning pocket .25 into action to kill a deer, you're legal.

leagle maybe

but not to smart, if you get a shot at "large" game animal shoot it with a "proper" round please.

Agreed, obviously.

A late friend of my fathers used to make allusions to an instance where he had been crawling down a game trail through some thick brush with a single-shot Remington .41 rimfire derringer in each fist, stalking wild hog. As this was not a game animal under TX law, I suppose it would have been legal. . . but not too good an idea! :)

Magazine Capacity (number of shells/cartridges allowed): There are no restrictions on the number of shells or cartridges a legal firearm may hold when hunting game animals or game birds (except migratory game birds, see
Does this mean I could hunt Deer witha 30 rd Mag.

It doesn't get any clearer than "There are no restrictions on the number of shells or cartridges a legal firearm may hold when hunting game animals" does it?!

If you have a MAC 90 and a C magazine for it, you can hunt game with it. Please note that I am NOT advocating these techniques-- just stating that they're legal here in Texas. And STILL, we should have a bounty on Hill Country whitetails.

The Feds' 3-round max for "migratory" game birds confuses lots of folks. As mentioned above, lots of folks have never caught up with the "unrestricted".

Even lots of older folks I've had in hunter ed classes have missed that test question - been carrying shotguns around all these years with plugs in 'em while quail or pheasant huntin' ... :D Probably just as well tho cuz generally after the first 2 or 3, the rest are just money being turned into noise ... ;)

Whenever you hear three (or more) shots fired in rapid succession it only means one thing:

He missed......

but get ready 'cause there's gonna be whitetails on afterburners running through the woods.

I just bleat at 'em, at most times least one will stop. My experience has been that it'll be the oldest doe (3 1/2 - 4 1/2 year old) and them's good eatin'.

On public land, you need to be careful when there is a lot of shooting going on close by. When I was young (perhaps 16), I was hunting with my trusty 243 and had a guy shooting above me on a bench (mountain top). I had not seen this hunter prior to hearing his very load shots.... very loud usually means close by and perhaps pointed in your direction.... Anyway, to make a long story short, I saw the whitetail buck moving toward me and the shots kept on coming. I hid behind a tree... large one. That deer finally fell within 30 yards of me and yes, that hunter was still racking off the shots. Pretty poor shooting actually. Don't recall how many shots this guy fired, but it was in the 10-12 range.

Personally, I don't think AR's and similar rifles have any place in the field for hunting even if they are "legal". Fun to shoot and all that, but not the best choice. Great anti-fodder that can be used against hunting. I know a lot of people disagree with me on this point about rifle choice.
