I am from a family that never hunted or owned guns, but I started shooting handguns about a year ago. It was very easy for me to find classes on how to shoot them, but I am thinking of moving up to rifles and shotguns now, but I would like to learn a little about them before I go out and rent or buy one. I am more interested in rifles and I would ideally like to be able to try a variety of different calibers and action types. I live in Twin Cities metro area in Minnesota and the closest I could find were a course from the DNR to prepare youth for hunting and a course for home defense, which included shotguns, but not rifles.

Check out Bill's gunshop. They have 2 indoor ranges, one just off 35W north of Hwy 10, and in Robbinsdale. They rent firearms, and I think you can get instruction from them as well.

If you are in South metro check out Burnsville range. You also have to understand in MN some areas are shotgun/slug ONLY (ok some pistol caliber and/or blackpowder rifles for deer where other areas you can use rifle.
Many clubs have a fall hunting sight in days and/or fall shows with demo guns. I think they had one North of Alexandria last weekend (Dalton?) Check around. Good luck.

Bill's is where I took my handgun classes and they do have good instructors, but they do not offer any courses for rifles.

One of your better bets is to attend a high power clinic hosted at one of the clubs I'm in, Gopher Rifle and Revolver Club. Excellent instruction, fun shooting. They start you at 200 yards, though you'd only get to shoot a modern service rifle (M1, M14, AR-15). I think they only do this clinic in May, unfortunately.

Wow takes me back about more than 60 years when I lived in your
area. Same circumstances, Grandfather was way too old, but a
shooter. Neighbor took us to southwest Minnesota were us kids
were allowed to take turns with a 410 to shoot jacks, while adults
smoked pheasants with larger shotguns. Some rifle instruction and
shooting with Boy Scouts. Final discovery of a nearby distant relat-
ive who retired and fished and hunted. Lot of wide open wanderland
in the southwest part of the twins and many a trek around the Edina
area that is totally built up now. Not a lot of organized instruction or
shooting then. At an early age (17) an enlistment in the Marines added
additional instruction. Can't recall any gun clubs back then, but a lot
of river bottom land to wander with a trusty .22:D

yonse,

The people that own DPMS in St Cloud are have a rifle "First Shots" program some weekend in Sept. It's free and you'll learn about rifle shooting and get to shoot an AR type rifle. The program is funded by the National Shooting Sports Foundation. You can get more info from their website at www.nssf.org. Look for the link to "First Shots".
