As the title of the thread asks, where did all of the lead BB loads go especially the 2 3/4'' loads. The only ones that I see being offered up today is from Hornady and Federal, but both of those are 3". What happened to these loads? I think this load had a lot of possibilities.

I haven't seen 2 3/4" or 3" lead BBs in a long time. I think it's due to federal non-toxic shot mandates for waterfowl. It seems to me the only folks that want lead BBs are fox and coyote hunters. That is a rather limited area of demand.

Yup, non-toxic shot mandates pretty much killed sales of large lead bird shot. #4 buck will kill anything that lead BB's would, with a little more range.

Ya, I had to switch to #4 buck years ago, because of the non toxic shot issue I assume?

I had been using copper plated BB for turkey, Rem. Nitro magnum. then I ran out of those around 1991 or so, and discovered they were no longer being manufactured. I have seen other versions of BB, but not lead.

Died with steel shot laws. Now days, I shoot steel T shot from a 10 gauge to do the same job BB lead did from a 3" hull in 12 gauge. I never did shoot 2 3/4" BB lead, not much use for it unless your gun doesn't chamber 3".

You could try hevi shot BBs. Expensive, but it's basically like shooting lead BB.

federal non-toxic shot mandates

Winner winner !

You can get heavi-shot in BB, or that extra heavy stuff BPI sells if ya load your own.

Beyond that, you'll have to salvage old shells from mom-n-pop gunstores hthat cleanout basements and the like !

I bought 3 boxes of Win 3 inch lead BB loads about 4years ago for yotes and foxes. Have not seen any since. If you want 2 3/4, gonna have to reload. BPI sells lead bb.

Thanks for all the replies folks, I knd of figured that steel shot was the primary cause of lead BB's demise. I have also been looking at the ballistic products web site for a few days as well, but a 8LBS jar that is way more than I need. Heavy shot is out of the question due to the high pricees that stuff cost, I certainly don't have that kind of disposable income. Since I'm not a migratory bird hunter I refuse to and never will run anything other than lead through my shotguns.

You can still get #2 lead. A bit smaller in size, but that's all you'll find in 2 3/4". Hornady still makes BB, but it is a 3" ounce and a half load.

I don't recall the shot count to ounce conversions, but the 3" mag. shells I used were like 2 oz., I think it was like 160 BB's, which was quite effective on turkey out to 50 yds. or so at 1250 fps.. Man those Nitro Mags were hard on the shoulder though, sure do miss em.
