Where do you buy your black powder?

Simple question as I’m curious how ya’ll get your BP?

I’ve been shooting my hawken recently and was not surprised that I can’t find BP around me.

I’d like to shoot my Hawken more as smokeless prices rise, especially since I have a decent supply of caps. And 15 shots is a pretty good afternoon with a Hawken.

Also, how much do you shoot in a year?

The dates on my last pound read 2/2/21 so I suppose I need to shoot more! I think I bought 2 or 3 pounds at that time. A pound is about 100 shots out of my .50 caplock.

Order 10 or more pounds to save on shipping and hazmat

We've been over this ground before. Real black powder has been the victim of regulations both gov and insurance, so to find it in a brick n mortar LGS is going to be a very rare thing. Your best source is to befriend some reenactors or join a NMLRA charter club and pool your order with them to amortize the shipping and hazmat costs.

I buy mine from Buffalo Arms Co. (BACO) and by the case to save on the hazmat fee. It is the same fee for 1 lb. or 25 lbs., and they give a discount per lb. for orders 10 lbs. or more.

Powder Valley - no minimum order and they offer free hazmat all the time. I've looked at the other BP distributors and no one else comes close with price and delivery speed. I think I shoot 5 lbs a year which equates to about 500 rounds for me.

Now if you needed and were legally allowed to store 25 lbs, then you might have some significant savings. Where I live, the laws are strict on how much BP you can store in a residence.

Grafs there just up the road.
I wish. I moved to rural WY recently. I used to live in Mid MO and having Grafs in Mexico and Midway in Columbia was very nice. I used to get factory second Sierras as well.

I found some Goex at a shop about 70 miles away but with fuel, those $35/lb bottles get mighty spendy.

I may pony up for a bulk order 🤔

I'm luck. I have a muzzleloader shop less than an hour away that is pretty well stocked.
As far as how much I shoot in a year, I don't know yet. Just now getting into real muzzleloaders.

A few online retailers do have it in stock. Grafs and Powder Valley to name a couple.
This may be sacrilegious but if nothing else, you could use a substitute from Wally World until you can get some.

Apparently not "all the time" as those are specials they run. According to their website, and my past buying experience, it's $22.99 hazmat for 1 lb. or up to 48 lbs. Here's their site info:

Yes, nice people too. I took the drive to Sandpoint (Idaho) and bought it directly from them. They don't really have a store, just a warehouse, but if you are local they will let you in (have to knock, they stay locked up) and sell to you. In person you don't have to purchase the minimum amount. But again, great people, the head honcho is some kind of super hunter, there is big game heads all over the walls. One was a super-giant Tatonka. I mean, it was BIG. Like really big.

I should have got more 4fg on my last visit, the revolvers really ate the last batch up fast. Down to my last pound. I stocked up properly for Bessie, still plenty of 1fg left, and at 140 grains per shot, Bessie has a big appetite.

Dave Gullo is one of the finest long range BPCR shooters in the world, and wins more matches than he loses wherever he shoots. He's also a super nice guy, and very accommodating to people with similar interests. A friend of mine was flying his small plane back home from a match we shoot in Northern Washington, and called Dave to see if he could buy BP on a Sunday. Dave picked him up at the airport and drove him to his business. Loaded up 50 lbs. of powder and drove him back to the airport.
Not many business owners who do that for a customer!

Are you saying your friend loaded 50lbs of Black Powder into his plane and flew it home?
