I seem to be having some trouble finding a FFL in my area. A list I have is either way out of date, some I call number is not in service, or they no longer do that, and the few I did seem to charge and arm and a leg for this.

That is one of the lists I am talking about.

Are you talking about someone who will do a transfer for you or just a dealer? If you are just looking for a FFL holder then look for any business selling firearms.

Anyplace that handles guns can do a transfer. I do most of mine thru a pawn shop. They seem happy to make a little extra cash ($20) to do it, other "sporting good" stores in my area act as if its a slap in the face to even ask them to do that, and they want $50 to transfer

Quickest thing will probably be to start calling a few places and ask them what they charge to do a transfer....
