I have 2 books, Lee and Lyman 49th, went to Alliant powder website, loaddata.com and cannot find a recipe for what I need, so I am asking for help. I will be loading 158 gr JFN-Berry's-Using Alliant powder American Select-None of my resources have this combo. Any suggestions? or keep buying books?

2004 Alliant load data has American Select loads for lead 38 Special bullets you can reference.

There are no differences between the standard pressure .38 Special cases and the .38 Special +P cases other than the headstamp just so you know.

Is there a specific reason why you are using American Select?

This is directly from the Berry's Site:
http://www.berrysmfg.com/faq-q9-c1-How_do_I_load_Berrys_Preferred_Plated_Bullets.aspx
Plated bullets occupy a position between cast bullets and jacketed bullets. They are soft lead, but have a hard outer shell on them. When loading plated bullets we have found best results using low- to mid-range jacketed data in the load manual. You must use data for a bullet that has the same weight and profile as the one you are loading. Do not exceed mid-range loads. Do not use magnum loads.

So, as you see you don't need the data to be for the Berry's bullet itself if you use the information provided by the manufacturer. Also, don't use a very firm roll crimp because it's easy to break through the plating and that will trash the accuracy.

Good luck finding an accurate load quickly.

I am using this powder becausd on there website they said it was a good pistol powder. I am also trying hodgdon clays and imr4077 as well as titegroup just to see the difference

I'm sure the powder company is telling you their product is a good one but IMO American Select isn't the best powder for .38 Special ammo.

Did you mean IMR4227? I don't think currently there is an IMR4077 and if there was it would probably be a rifle powder. If you are talking about IMR4227 that powder is way too slow for use in standard pressure .38 Special rounds. It's even on the slow side for +P pressures and is much better suited for .357 Magnum rounds.

I use almost nothing other than W231/HP-38 for my .38 Special ammo. I use it with jacketed. plated and lead bullets and it produces very accurate and clean ammo for me. There are plenty of good powders for loading the .38 Special, American Select just doesn't come to mind when I think .38 Special.

Hey, loading up all different powders is a good way to learn and then you get to shoot all that ammo which is never a bad thing. Don't forget the range report...

Sorry, I meant 4227, and I wont be using that again, it requires to much powder
