I am going to get either a Bushnell Holosight or a red dot sight for my Kahr M1 carbine and am wondering if it should be placed on a scope mount over the receiver or attached 'scout mount' style over the forearm. It will be used for plinking, self defense and for blacktail deer hunting at 'brush gun' ranges. Thanks for the input.

Thanks GB, yes that is the scout mount I was thinking of. I'm just wondering which sight position is more advantageous in terms of visibility of target, target acquisition, and precision.

Well, personally I find that red dots work better closer to the eye. I know that a lot have unlimited eye relief, but the closer the better. I have one on an AK and it is good to have it close. I also have a tiny red dot mounted piggy-back on my scoped rifle. The piggy backed one is not as comfortable for me due to its distance from my eye. Anyway, sorry that I couldn't be more help.
I would suggest the closer, the better.

I like the red-dot farther from my eye - less like a scope and more like the open sights; only quicker.

Another option for you if you want it closer.

For Dots or Holo's, I prefer them at arms length, like a handgun. Which would put them closer to what Gunsby and USSR posted. But if you like it closer, consider this type mount. Personal preference.
