Where to research SKS variants?

I'd thought about getting one. I really want kind of a fun semi-auto to take to the range once in a while. Something with a little more punch than a .22.
I've read that SKSs are pretty reliable and have loads of interchangable parts.
Apparantly they are fairly affordable for a buyer on a budget as well.
I don't know what to look for in an SKS or which ones are better than others.
