Not sure about the abundance of wilderness but there are a few ranges around. If you want to try IDPA, carbine, or IPSC matches, PM me and I'll give you all the details. As for ranges, there are some indoor ranges in Palm Beach but they all require you to buy thier ammo now (thier way of making more money) and there are several between Broward and Dade. Go to http://www.tssa.net and you can find links to a bunch of stuff on our links page.

Lots of ranges (public and private, indoor and outdoor) around. Many indoor ranges here in Palm Beach County have indeed been requiring people to use their range ammo as a condition of shooting. Bad business, IMO.

I'd recommend the Arizona Shooting Range in Ft Lauderdale. It's small... it has only four or five lanes, but the folks there are decent guys. Ask for Mark.

For rifles, the only 100 meter range I know of that's totally open to the public is Markham Park, in west Broward County. It's a county-run facility, and the Range Officers can sometimes be quite... ummm.... "officious" (keeping Art's Grandmaw in mind), but it's usually quite safe. (For an alternative, ask Mark about Pop Dean's Hunt Club.)

Also, be sure to check out our forum Florida Shooter's Network and don't hesitate to ask about anything you need to know...

Follow the link above for a list of ranges, indoor and outdoor.
Closest outdoor to you would be Markam Park, Indiantown, Okeechobee and Sebastian.

Delray shooting center is an indoor range between Linton and Atlantic.

I wouldn't patronize any PB county indoor range since they got together and make you buy their own ammo to shoot. I hope they all go under.

No wilderness east of the Glades and south of Yeehaw Junction. Decent hunting in the Yeehaw Junction area.

South Florida is like the North East, North Florida is like another world. One more friendly to people and shooting.

Hope you have a good job. Median price of a home in PB county is up to 350k and rising every day. I also hope you like hords of people and traffic congestion the likes of LA.

Tabing, since Delray Beach is in southern Palm Beach I believe you would have to drive really far to find a place to shoot in the wilderness, legally anyways. When I was a kid we used to drive down to the Everglades to shoot but don't think it can be done anymore. Markham Park in Broward County is the only public range I am aware of and the range officers act like drill sergeants. It is the only 100 yard range though so if you want to shoot a rifle it is pretty much it. As a whole there is not much freedom to shoot down here. Way too many people in way too small of an area and the area is growing like cancer.

Thanks for the replies, spending some years and now my summers in Arizona, I'm use to having a couple million arces of National forest closeby to shoot in (don't really like ranges much, only use them for sighting in). I inherited a condo in Delray, and thought I might settle there when I leave the Gulf. Aside from the shooting, one big attraction is the ocean, I like the beach and deep sea fishing. I guess I'll spend a couple of months in Florida, and most of the time in Arizona.
