Hello,

I live in Northeast Ohio. I have a group of people that want to be introduced to firearms and shooting this week, and was planning on taking them to the range that I use. However, I contacted the owner of that range, and he said it would be $15/person/hour. Suffice it to say that I can't make that happen. This is potentially 6 people for FAR more than 1 hour. I'm not a member of that range as they are not allowing any more memberships.

I'm used to living in more rural places where you can just drive outside of town and shoot all you want, but obviously Northeast Ohio isn't as rural as those places.

1.) Does anyone know of any rural, secluded places in the Akron, Canton, Youngstown area where you can go and just shoot? I know southern Ohio probably has a lot of places like that, but driving 2 hours both ways probably isn't going to work.

2.) Or, does anyone know of a range that would be significantly cheaper? If it is a range, it has to allow rifles up to .308, too.

Thanks in advance, everyone!

In the future could you phrase topics like this differently?

My first impression was there was a "Shooting in Ohio".

Maybe.. "Where to go shooting in Ohio?"

:)

After it's been up for a few hours you can't edit it. If it's still early enough you can edit the original post and the Subject will appear so you can edit it. After some time has passed that option disappears, and only Mods can change them.

I found something relatively promising. The Grand River Wildlife Area a few miles north of Warren has a $5 all-day range fee, or $24/year (this is all of their Wildlife ranges). It's an hour & 15 minutes from where we're at, but it'll do.

I did some research and was very disappointed to see that the Wildlife areas without ranges don't allow shooting unless it's strictly for hunting. Oh well!

There's an outdoor range in Garrettsville called AA shooting and hunting. They don't have a web site that I can find.

I think a wildlife area that has a pistol range would probably be your best bet cost-wise, but I don't know a ton about NE ohio so hopefully more people will chime in too.

I'd recommend making the drive to Grand River. I shoot there fairly often and it's a nice enough place. 25 yard handgun and rimfire range, anything goes on the 50 and 100 yard ranges, up to and including .50BMG. Rapid fire limited to two or three rounds, they've had problems in the past with yahoos "climbing" the berm and shooting over. Buy your range passes anywhere you'd buy a hunting license (they don't sell them at the range) and bring targets to paste or staple on the target frame and backer they give you at the range.

Bring your lunches and drinks, there are no concessions and just a porta-potty.

Half the stations at each yardage are covered, the other half open with berms between the ranges, so a cease fire on the 100 or 50 doesn't affect you at the 25, and so on.

Maybe I'll see you there, I need to get my pistols out again and my new barrel is on it's way. I hope to have the new rifle put together by the wekend.

The Wildlife Area range is closed on Mon and Tues, as well as the entire months of Jan and Feb. Police use it Mon, Tue and it's just too darn cold Jan and Feb. This late in the year, I'd recommend getting the one day pass.

BTW, I shot once at AA trap and skeet. Once. Something about a place that had to post signs "Please do not shoot the building" and everything riddled with bullet holes didn't give me a warm and tingly sensation.

PM me if you want specific directions, the sign by the road is easy to miss.

We decided to go to the Grand River range. $20-$30 instead of the $120-$270 that it would have been at the place I normally go. This place sounds pretty sweet. It's a bit of a drive, especially since I'm used to a 5 minute drive (Idaho and Pennsylvania), but seems like the best option. I can live with only a 100-yard range for most of my shooting trips.
