Well folks the big move out to Staunton, VA is almost upon us and I just know that after all that work and effort I'll want to work off some stress by punchin' a little paper :D

Can anyone tell me a bit about these places (or suggest others)? Thanks.

Charlottesville - Rivanna Rifle and Pistol Club,
1570 Old Lynchburg Rd., Charlottesville, VA 22903.

Harrisonburg - Flying Rabbit Sporting Clays,
P.O. Box 1234, Harrisonburg, VA 22803.

Harrisonburg - Top Gun Range,
Rt. 988 Early Road, Harrisonburg, VA 22801.

Harrisonburg - U.S. Training & Development Center,
Rt 988, Early Road, Harrisonburg, VA 22801.

Staunton - Hite Hollow Shooting Range,
Hite Hollow Rd., Staunton, VA 24401.

Staunton - Shenandale Gun Club,
P.O. Box 901, Staunton, VA 24402.

Hite Hollow would be your best bet. It's the only free public access range on the list and it's the closest to you. I drive over from Charlottesville whenever I want to go shooting and I'm almost always able to get an open bench.

Hope to see ya there.

I used to shoot at Rivanna when I lived in Charlottesville. Nice setup, had an indoor pistol range and some nice rifle ranges, and on weekdays it was pretty empty but it was sort of a hassle to join.

I don't recall all of the specifics, but I think you had get letters of recommendation and possibly even be sponsored by members. This is easy to do once you have been in a community for a while but not so easy when you first move in.

+1 on Hite Hollow. But there are other places to shoot as well. You really should get to know a local land owner in the area. :)

Hite Hollow is the place. Be there on July 29 and you'll get a chance to shoot some machine guns (bring your own ammo). :)

If you don't mind a 25 mile drive in the country, there's:

Buena Vista - Blue Ridge Shooters' Club Inc., 2780 South River Road (SR 608 Vesuvius), Buena Vista, VA 24416.
Phone: 540-261-6657
Facilities include: Outdoor Pistol (up to 100yds ), Rifle Silhouette, Pistol Silhouette, Muzzleloading, Trap, Skeet, Archery, Airgun
Hours of Operation: Dawn to Dusk
Range Access: Private
Email: [email protected]

My father and I belonged for years and it was never crowded. Basically a 100-yard range with a building to shoot from. One clay machine. I think it's $75 or $100 a year to get you a key to the lock on the gate. Used to be $50.

I was told that the U.S. Training range in Harrisonburg is indoor, but I haven't had time to stop by to see when I'm in town visiting my folks at the Mennonite Retirement Community.

There are an indoor and outdoor range as well as a nice skeet range at VMI but they are not open to the public.

Quail Ridge is good for Skeet also but it is aways out in the countryside South West of Lexington In fact there are a few fancy skeet clubs in the area.

I went to a cowboy shoot many years ago at Blue Ridge Shooters Club. The range seemed a little small but was good for comboy shooting.

There are National forest ranges out west of there too, one near Craigsville, and one in Bath County. I am an hour west of Staunton, I shoot on my own land but still go to the range to keep the volume of fire from concerning the neighbors. There is IPSC up north near Winchester and down in Roanoke. I haven't had a chance to compete in too damn long.

I am surprised to see so many THR members in and around Staunton considering the size of the town. I will be unable attend in July as I will be finishing up here in Texas until about 31 July. But if anyone want to get together and shoot after that I would be more than happy to. I have shot at the range near Craigsville and it is not too bad. It is bit of a trip from Staunton.

Hite Hollow is the outdoor range near Craigsville. It's actually located in Augusta Springs. I live 10-15 minutes from Hite Hollow and shoot there perhaps 1-2 per week. It's probably a 30 minute drive from Staunton city limits. The range is a joint effort between the Virginia Dept of Game & Inland Fisheries and the NRA. It is divided into two sections: one pistol and one rifle/shotgun. There are 2 benches on the pistol side and 6 or 8 on the rifle/shotgun side. All benches are covered and overall it is well-maintained. There is a permanent single restroom structure onsite as well. I believe the single biggest problem w/ Hite Hollow is the fact that the rifle/shotgun section is an UPHILL shoot at 100 & 150 yards. When I say uphill, I really mean UPHILL. Have a good spotting scope and bring your hiking boots! The 50 yard shoot is moderately flat. They request you shoot only paper targets which hang on a wire fence which they replace on occasion. Bring cardboard, clothespins, lots of ammo, and something to drink and you can shoot ALL DAY!

Hello

I'm relatively new to this forum and have not posted previously. I'm serving in Iraq and can't indulge my usual recreational shooting (but can take a break now and then as a voyeur on a few of these fora). Anyway, I appreciate the information on the ranges in Staunton. I am from Charlottesville and have been in the Navy 22 years. I built my retirement home (prematurely) a few miles northeast of Staunton, near New Hope (or as my father calls it, "No Hope") on 50 acres. For now it is a vacation home and I engage mainly in rimfire pest control there as I kind of like my neighbors. Also, I am a member of both an indoor and outdoor range in Virginia Beach.
I thought about Shenandale range as an option when I finally retire. Perhaps I'll see some of you in the future.

BowWave, I hope you make it back okay. I built my retirement home over in Highland, only problem is I'm not going to make it to retirement, something about a ten year sea counter in 14 served is hard on the family. Check out Camp Allen too when you get back if you haven't already, it's a nice range with far less exciting customers than A&P.

one more range?

When I've come down from Maryland to hike in the National forest just west of Harrisonburg (off 33?) there is a National Forest Range (I used to shoot my Mosin there).

Is that one of the ranges mentioned or am I mis-remembering....

I think this is the range of which you're speaking....

West Side Shooting Range: Open year-round, it provides shooting lanes of various lengths, covered shooting benches and a parking area. The range is located on FDR 151, about one mile north of the junction of FDR 151 and Route 33. The turnoff is about one mile east of the Brandywine Lake Recreation Area, in West Virginia. (Dry River Ranger District, 540-828-2591.)

So many military folks retiring in Staunton? I will retire there myself in several years. Like Bowwave I bought my retirement home there a little prematurely.

Dangone....where were all you boys when I actually lived in Staunton. I was just down there this weekend visiting the inlaws. Made a stop at the Gun Shack and ate lunch at Wright's.

Made for a pretty good day.

Probably living in Maryland. :barf: At least I was smart enough to move the other direction. :neener: Do they still let you have guns in Maryland?

:scrutiny:

Oh wait... I feel Dave looking this way...
