I've been a long time user of Hornady .308 150 grain SP bullets. I have absolutely no complaints about the bullet. They are accurate, I get sub moa groups, they perform well on deer, etc. However, I'm not too crazy about the stance they took as a company during the vaccine mandates.

So now that I'm getting low and need to order some bullets, I'm thinking I'd like to give another company a try. I want a bullet that'll be accurate, and perform well on deer. It seems like I'm left with several choices. I'm looking at the Speer Hot Cor, Speer Gold Dots (seem to be out of stock), Sierra Pro Hunters, etc, but not set on these. Like anything, it's hard to sift through the reviews and tell what's factual and isn't.

Which bullet do you all like? I'm open to any recommendations.

I've been a big fan of sierra game kings in every caliber and weight I've tried them in.
I appreciate it. I somehow missed these in my search. It looks like finding them in stock might be a bit of a challenge, but it looks like it's worth giving a try if I can find any.

Speer, Sierra and Nosler all make really great hunting bullets for the .30. I tend to prefer Sierra Game Kings but also use the Hot-Cor Speer. Both in .30-06, not .308.

I've settled upon the Speer 150gr H.C. in my 30-06, and they've been more accurate than anything else I've tried, including a couple boattails. Now I haven't shot a deer yet with this 06, but I know full well the performance of Speer H.C. 308 loads in a 30-30, no bullet any better. It's just a great old Cup&Cor Bullet for deer. So I have no doubt it'll do the job in my 06!

The problem is finding alternatives for sale. Hornady seems to be readily available. Nosler, Sierra, Barnes, Speer-not so much. That said I've had great results with Hornady SPs, Nosler, and either Sierra's Gameking or Prohunter.

A year ago when I was looking for bullets to start loading for 308, Speer Hot Cor became available, and I got several responses suggesting they were widely used and highly preferred deer hunting bullets. And at $25 per hundred, the cheapest option out there.

But parent company of Speer is the Vista Group. How do you know if they don't have the same issues as Hornady. Or any of the others for that matter?

BTW, having started accumulating reloading components a year ago.......intent on developing a reliable, long term (my lifetime and a short while beyond) supply of ammunition for what few firearms I have........I recently began to consider the affect of balance. For example........center fire ammo has a 1:1 ratio between primers and projectiles. For the rifles I'm loading for, that also requires a pound of powder (closer to 0.6 to 0.75 pounds per 100......but I rounded up).

Having taken stock of primers and powder, I'm nearly set. No where near close to being balanced with bullets. Now that I've managed to develop working loads for most of them, I'm able to start padding the stash with more projectiles......and that includes lead shot. Slowly getting there.......but for now, if something needs plugging, I'm able to muster ammo to fuel the plugger. Something I was nip and tuck on being able to do only a year or so back. There are still some things that give me cause for concern, but want of a live round to chamber is no longer one of them.

165 gr Sierra Gameking Spitzer Boat Tail is my favorite bullet out of my 30-06 for deer.

The Sierra Gameking Hollow point in the same weight was too damaging on deer so I’ve stuck with the BTSP for years.

Confused... as Hornady bullets were the easiest to get during the plandemic. Speer was and is the hardest. Hornady seemed to take care of reloaders better than anybody.
What is your issue with them?

I have hunted a lot with the Speer Boat Tail SKU 2022. It has a little higher BC than the Hot Core at the same price. It expands well, stays together and has been at least for me more accurate than the Hornady BTSP.

Speer hot cor or Sierra pro hunters should perform very similarly to the Hornady SP's both on game and in the accuracy department. I'd be more than happy to use either on deer or pigs.

I guess we don't know for sure, but it's never been released that they did. We do know for certain about Hornady's policy.

That's a shame about hornady... I quit carhart for the same reason!
Don't forget to write a letter to them to let them know why...

Sierra makes an awesome product
Yep, I also quit buying Carhartt. I'm really hoping I can find some of the Game Kings in stock and give them a try. They sound just like what I'm looking for.

Ok, I give. What's the issue with Hornady?
Google is your friend on this one.
Before you go discussing, y'all might recall just because somebody owns a gun don't mean they're down with the Constitution and everything in it. And, just because somebody is very respectful of the Constitution and ll that's in it don't mean they interpret gun ownership the same way you do. There's lots of gun owners and avid shooters who would happily sign the bill to take away your rights - because in their view, you're an idiot who is going to ruin things for everybody.
If somebody wants to change bullet maker's okie-dokey. Don't matter why.
