I recall seeing an AR model that used a side (FAL-like) charging handle. If the back of the receiver is closed on that, it would solve gas blowback problem with suppressors. Does anyone recall the brand or know much about its reputation?

DPMS used to show one, but it's not on their redesigned web site. Maybe you can call 'em and ask?

I'm lefthanded-- wouldn't be much of a help to me beyond a few oohs and aahs at the range. The exact same set-up on the right side of the gun would work for me, but who's going to produce it?

Dave Lauck of D&L Sports produces a right hand version of the same thing. It replaces the dust cover and requires a slot milled into the side of the upper receiver up to the case deflector.

AR15s are great that way - you have to think pretty hard to come up with something that someone hasn't already made for it.

This one?

The rear is closed and the side charger can be changed to either side.

She's an Olympic OA93PT.

American Spirit Arms had an upper like this as well, however they are now out of business.
