I love the Beretta 92 but can't figure out which variant to get. Anyone have any suggestions? I've seen the comparison charts, but which is "best?"

From my understanding the M9A1 sounds the most full featured (except missing the stainless steel of the Inox.) Is that true? How can the M9A1's take a 17 rd magazine? Is the mag well just deeper?

Thanks in advance!

The 92A1, M9A1, and 90-Two come with Beretta's new 17-round magazines. These magazines fit in all variants of the Beretta 92. In fact, Mec-Gar has been making flush-fitting 18-round and extended 20-round magazines for the Beretta for a long time. I have both of these mags, and they both work great in my 92FS. I always smile when people compare the Glock 17, XDM 9, or some other full-size 9mm to the Beretta, and say that one of the disadvantages of the Beretta is that it only holds 15 rounds in the magazine. Well, yeah, only if you choose to use the old standard 15-rounds mags. Times have changed, and so has the capacity of the old Beretta 92/M9! Get with it people, it's a 17+1 firearm now.

I love the classic look and pedigree of the standard Italian-made 92FS, but if I were going to buy another Beretta 92 variant, it would probably be the 96A1, just to have a different caliber, upgradeable sights, and an integrated rail.

Be careful, your first Beretta 92 could lead to a sickness that member Shipwreck can tell you all about. Do a search for his "Beretta Wheel". Glorious...

I love my 92D because of the beautifully smooth slide. Had my local gunsmith do a trigger job on it and it is objectively speaking the best Pistol for my purposes I own.

That doesn't stop me from playing with my 3.5 inch RIA more, though.

The 92D is just that good though. If I really could only own one gun, I would have to say that'd be it. Not that that'll ever happen.

Also, keep in mind, there may not be as many holster options for the M9A1 This is because of the light rail. It's still a good choice though. I have an M9 25th Anniversary Edition. Its been flawless. I'm sure you'll love either one. :)

Beretta

I debated with myself whether to respond to this thread or not.

Oh well in for a penny, in for a pound.

For 1/2 the price of a "Beretta", you can buy a Turkish made "Beretta" MKEK Girsan Yavuz 16. This pistol is a Beretta clone (parts seem to be 100% interchangable) This pistol is carried by the Turkish military, among others, and is indistinguishable from a Beretta "tagged" product. Different rumors abound, but seems like the Turk State arms manufacturer, MKEK, had a deal with Beretta that went soiuth.

Beretta had allowed them to make and sell for military/police use, i.e. (Syrian army, Malaysian special forces, and national police, Colombian Air Forces Security Service, etc.) However, Beretta never OK'd their use for import into the U.S.A. for sales to the commercial civilian market. ATI tried to do this, and got into some hot water with Beretta (my take) CDNN bought the lot and has been liquidating them for cheap. Out of about 3000, CDNN (according to Steve) has a couple of hundred left. Once they are gone, they are no more here in the states. Why would Beretta want a "Beretta" to be able to be retailed for 1/2 the price their guns retail for? If you guys will remember, this is the 2nd time ATI has gotten into trouble over importing exact copies. Remember the H&K lawsuit?

Long post I know, sorry about that. Would someone else that owns one of these pistols sign in and back me up? I own 6 (six) autoloaders from all over the world, and this one is by far the best shooter of the bunch.

If you want a Beretta, and do not mind saving a bunch of $$$ to buy ammo with...you will not be dissapointed.

Anyhow @ $299 + shipping and ffl, about $332.

Anyone else own one of these (fantastic shooters) who can chime in to verify...before the flames begin!! LOL

It is harder to find holsters for the 92A1 and M9A1s due to the accessory rail. Aside from that, there isn't much different. On my list is an M9 with post-dot sights.

Get the ones made in Italy-much different trigger feel.

I'm not sure how you came to that conclusion, since every single part between a US-made 92 and an Italian-made 92 are identical (other than markings) and interchangeable. I've shot examples of both US and Italian 92's and there is no difference. Way back in the very late 80's and early 90's, when the US had just begun production of the M9 in the US factory, there may have been slight differences in materials and methods between the US and Italian factories, but currently, the consensus among Beretta experts is that the markings on the gun are the only differences between a US and an Italian Beretta. Can a trigger feel slightly different from 1 Beretta 92 to another? Possibly, but it's definitely not because of which factory the gun came from.

I came to that conclusion over my last 30 + years of shooting.

I came to that conclusion from personal 92 ownership and shooting the 92s of my family members who have 92s.

You are exactly right, OregonJohnny. Certainly in the last few years, if there are any differences between American-made and Italian-made Beretta 92s (and, after shooting 92s made by both countries, I don't think there are), said "differences" are impossible (for me, at least) to discern. If a shooter can tell the difference between the trigger pull on an American-made 92 as opposed to an Italian-made 92, it's, as you pointed out, most likely because:

"...Can a trigger feel slightly different from 1 Beretta 92 to another? Possibly, but it's definitely not because of which factory the gun came from."

I can't tell the difference in trigger feel between my brother's italian FS and my Ackokeek (sp?) FS, other than my trigger is now nicer since I intalled the D spring recently.

+1 OregonJohnny

To the OP: The Beretta you choose should be the one that fits your hand best; grip and balance. There are other options besides the 92/92Two/M9/92A1 options; Vertec grips, for instance on 92FS's fit small hands better. You may like the shortened barrels for balance of some models. Feel them. Shoot them if possible.

There is no best. You just keep buying until you've collected them all, but everyone who said, "Find the one that fits your hand," are correct.

Also, keep in mind that the Beretta 92 is very customizable. You can get everything from ultra-thin Trausch grips, to fat sticky rubber Hogue grips with finger grooves. I might try some of the Hogue Extreme aluminum checkered grips eventually. I have those on my Sig 220 Carry Elite, and they feel fantastic. You can also change out the current plastic or plastic-coated parts with all-metal parts (guide rod, trigger, safety/decocker lever, magazine release, mainspring lanyard housing).

On my 92FS, the things that I've changed are the hammer (for the skeletonized Elite hammer), the magazine release (for the oversized checkered one), the guide rod (for a blued steel one), the hammer spring (to the Beretta "D" spring - a must!), and the recoil spring (up 1 pound from stock to a 14-lb.) I've even got a slip-on rail (called the TICK - it's works very well) when I feel like attaching a light.

You can turn your Beretta into anything you want!

Thank you all for the additional info. I hadn't considered holster availability as I now live in California and can't carry anymore. Actually, for that matter, I can't even use the 15 (much less 17) round mags. =(

And OkieGunner thanks for the info about the Turkish variant! While I'm looking for info about a purchase, I also love reading threads for entertainment and additional random info.

M9A1 or 92FS Inox

Both are great. You can't go wrong with either. I like the M9A1 because of the light rail and use it as my nightstand gun.

I like my Italian INOX and my USA made Y2K serial number 92FSs. I have never shot the Brigadier or the M9A1 so I can't say anything about these other ones. The INOX is a very accurate pistol.

If I had to choose a Beretta 92 variant it would have be the Vertec model. The regular 92grip frame is sort of large for my smaller hands and somewhat difficult to utilize the trigger in DA mode. But the straighter design of the backstrap on the Vertec frame makes it much more suitable for me to get a proper grip and to reach the trigger.

Get an Italian 92FS. Then, ditch the Italian hammer spring cap roll pin and install a US made version that doesn't need to be punched out, install D-spring and Elite II Hammer. You will be in love. Also, Galco has a paddle holster, called the Matrix, that is only $26 with free shipping on amazon. :)
