This weekend I went to shoot my 870 pump shotgun and hi-power 9mm.

The pistol is fun, but the pump gun is just much more fun. The only thing is that the ammo is so expensive.

What gun/ammo combo out there is fun? I imagine something where I have to operate a bolt but I'm open to suggestions. I live in CA so mp5/ar is out of the question.

Russian Surplus

Mosin Nagant M44. A big-bore bolt rifle similar to a .308. Huge flash, boom and recoil. It's historic, has a bayonet, and is tons of fun! You can buy them all day long for $100, with really good ones at around $120. Ammo is cheap also, it eats 7.62x54R cartridges, which come out to around 10 cents per round when you are buying milsurp in bulk.

There is no gun with a higher fun for the money ratio, IMHO.

Start here or call around to find a gunshop in your area that carries milsurps.

but the pump gun is just much more fun. The only thing is that the ammo is so expensive.

Try birdshot. Very cheap by the case and much less recoil. I like to shoot it out of my Mossberg 500 with pistol grip (no shoulder stock.) I even tried to shoot it one-handed. Not as cool as I thought it would be, but I'm sure it looked good.

Marlin Model 60 and .22 LR

You can buy a used Marlin Model 60, semi auto, used, at almost any gun shop for under $100 (sometimes way under). I paid less than $60 for one and $75 for another closet queen. Easy to clean and take down and all the parts are available.

(Unlike the Ruger 10/22 there aren't a lot of accessories to tempt you to turn it into a .22 assault rifle look alike, so you'll save $ there too.)

Heck I have so much fun with them I gave one of them away to my son and bought another brand new one, all stainless, composite stock for $125 last month.

The older ones hold 17 rounds in a tube mag and they are way more accurate than they have any right to be for the price. You don't need one but a cheap .22 mag scope, complete with rings, will set you back maybe another $30 or so.

Then spend your money on brick after brick of bulk .22 ammo.

The actual cost per shooting session is about as cheap as it gets.

MY fun Pack is a Mosin M44 and a 10-22.
The mosin runs me about $40 for a case of 440 rounds and the .22 runs about $10 per brick of 500 rds.
A case of 7.62x54 lasts me about a year and a brick of .22 lasts about 2 range trips.

It depends on what you call inexpensive.
To shoot with the least cost you would have to shoot something in the 22LR range.
In any center fire caliber, hand loading your own ammo will cut your ammo cost about in half.

The gun that I've had the most fun with in a long time is the Kel Tec PLR-16 223 pistol.
It's interesting, unusual and a ball to shoot.
The price of the gun is about $430 (stripped) and .223 ammo isn't too expensive (yet).

7.62X54R and the Mosin Nagant M38 or any newly acquired MN and firing it until the residual cosmoline smokes.

Shooting a G2 Contender at the range is always fun. Once you wow 'em with the blast of a .221 Fireball or .223 then you break out the steel case 3" Barnaul .410's.

Mega dittoes on "anything in .22 RF". For inexpensive shooting, there really isn't much of anything in the same league, IMO. Finding any CF ammo - surplus, commercial, or even handloads - at a price per-round even mildly comparable to plain ol' generic .22 LR is pretty much a distant memory, I'm afraid. Sheesh!, with the prices for powder and caps anymore you can't even shoot a small-caliber muzzle loader as cheaply, even if you cast your own balls.

Virtually all action types are represented in at least a couple of flavors, in price ranges to suit any budget or taste from 'tap water' to Dom Perignon. It's really tough to find a quality-made .22, new or decent-condition used, that won't be capable of shooting better than most folks can hold for with at least a couple of loads and do it for a generation or two with moderate care. I don't believe that I've ever seen a .22 RF barrel on a rifle or handgun made in the past fifty years that's been 'worn out' from shooting, and that includes 'club' target rifles and handguns with documented logs showing round counts well into the six figures.

If you like playing with that pump shotgun, try a Taurus/Rossi M-62 or the like. 'Trombones' didn't rule the shooting galleries back-in-the-day for nuthin'!

Something in .22LR, really what else can you get 500+ rounds of ammo for under ten bucks?

Also go with a marlin modle 60. Cheaper then the 10/22 and out of the box a better rifle. Marlins are good for out of the box, 10/22's if you want to hone some basic gun smithing skills at home.

Anything my daughter wants to shoot with me.

Again, anything in 22 LR.... personally, my 10/22.... I do enjoy firing everything else i own BUT i find that i am too serious with the revolvers and centerfires as i am attempting to achieve (relative) long range accuracy... especially with competition handloads, etc... I've intentionally left the 10/22 open sighted so that i can stay in shape lest i develop scopeitis...

Cheapest centerfire handgun/ammo combination might still the Makarov. They shoot well, too. Much fun to be had by all. A friend of mine claims his .44 Magnum is the cheapest to shoot, using full-house factory ammo. One or two is all he can stand.

.38/.357 levergun and revolver. Very versatile, relatively cheap factory ammo, easy to reload. Sufficient power range from plinking to gravest extreme.

I find...

.22 is the least expensive
Followed by 9mm
and then 38 special

My K9GL is awfully fun, but so is my Cimarron 1866.
