Which is more important for CCW.....

there are a lot of things you could use to improvise a magazine carrier out of, just look around a little. you dont need to spend a bunch of money on something fancy. my 45 really is not all that finiky as far as ammo goes, at least factory ammo. see if you can bum a few rounds from your buddies to try. if you find one that works, use it. that is the nice thing about a 45. they will stop with ball loads, and almost any hp will do better, at least under the right circumstances. if you are worried about it, sometimes i carry fmj,hp,fmj,hp etc all the way through the mag. that way if you need to shoot through something hard, you have fmj's to penetrate.

I suggest not carrying FMJs. They are known to over penetrate and harm innocent people. Get a good JHP and carry an extra mag somehow. Mag holder or not, a 8rnd 1911 is a little lacking in capacity and warrants an extra mag. It makes up for it somewhat in stopping power, but an extra mag cannot hurt. I carry a small 5rnd snubbie .38 in places where I need maximum conealability. I make sure I have 5 extra rounds in case I need them. I don't have a speed loader yet, but I am looking for one. I am also saving for a 1911 to carry in other places.

I don't see why you think a full size 1911 is a bad idea.

My 1911 is my year round carry piece, and I live in South Texas. It's real hot here.

Honestly, with the right jeans and a dark T-shirt I can get away with it.

There's hard questions and easy questions, and then there's the "no-brainers"..

.having more ammunition carried (but in a less potent projectile) in the form of reloads, or having a good-performing JHP projectile "ready to go" and no reloads?

The second thing there. :)

I dont remember anyone saying that you should still break in your 1911 if its new. put at least 400 rounds through it. i was told that mostly fmj's are ok but you want to through in a few boxes of the jhp's you will be using. USE JHP's, I carry my full size 1911, in fact its a para gun rights model, the hi cap one, but the grip is not that much bigger than a standard 1911.

geronimo509, thanks for the offer, but it's not a new 1911--i bought it plenty-enough used, enough so that it had some feint but distinctive holster wear left over from the previous owner; i can only presume that it proved to be reliable with something, and was broken-in enough by the previous owner.

But thanks for the advice.

Your personal situation is what should decide this, in "hairy" situations you will decide how and how much you should carry.

Stuff clips in the pocket. People who talk about "lint" are not working in the real world. Carry one in the pocket a week, two, or three. Then stick it in the gun and shoot it off. It will work, trust me. I do this test frequently!

If carrying a gun and shooting it reliably is a fetish, then get a 2.5" S&W 66/19 or 686, and a speed loader. You will have a smaller gun to hide, about equal reload time, and massively higher reliability. Just do some thinking.

what would be MOST important would be to train to be able to hit a target, with ANY kind of ammo you have loaded....
that will matter more than what you hit it with.

so. learn to hit with a good quality ammo, and carry that.

also pratice yer draw, over and over and over and over and over!

ip.
