Maybe I'm paranoid.

My wife and I decided we are going to join the NRA, so I figgered the easiest thing to do would be to go to their web site and join. I Googled "NRA" and found both an NRA.COM and an NRA.ORG. Both sites look the same, and I figure it's probably just the NRA playing it safe and tying up both names.

But... I'm sure you know where I'm going...

I don't know that one site isn't just some anti organization that is running a look-alike site to fool the unsuspecting. So my question is, which one is real or are both of them good? And am I just too paranoid?

I'm hoping to get a solid answer soon... I feel the need to join right now.

Also, it would be nice if there was a good link to the NRA in the THR Library. I looked... didn't see one.

Which NRA?

You can always PING the domain name and see if the IP addresses line up.

Here's a PING done from my box minutes ago:
C:\Temp>ping nra.org

According to my DNS, the sites are the same place.

Both domains resolve to 64.29.201.96, so . . .

Party on, dude.

NRA-ILA = uses your money to fight politically.

I'm new to this culture, and wasn't aware of even the existence of NRA-ILA. Something I'll have to look into, also.

I take it you're pro-NRA-ILA? (IOW, it's a good thing and reputable.)

NRA-ILA is the politically active subset of the NRA, the ILA stands for Institute for Legislative Action IIRC. Joining the NRA is good, others will naysay that position because they do not agree with 100% of the NRA's positions. However the NRA is to date the oldest, largest and most respected (or feared, depending upon perspective) pro 2A body currently
working in DC. The more members it has the more clout it has. Many people disagree with some of the positions taken by AARP but they still represent the single biggest club in DC for older people. For us the NRA is the biggest club. However joining SAF and GOA doesn't hurt either and the annual dues are not that expensive either.

That brings another question to mind: Does anyone know the AARP's position on RKBA? Seems to me that they would be in favor of anything that could equalize the mismatch between a Senior and a criminal. I'm not quite at an age to join AARP, but when I get there, their position on RKBA and CCW will directly impact whether or not I join.

The AARP is most definitely anti-gun, supports gun control, and supported the Assault Weapons Ban of 1994. It never met a gun control law it didn't like.

Read its official position on gun control (halfway down the page) and recognize the AARP's underlying commitment to more gun control while it doubletalks about a "right to bear arms."

It just does not believe in a "right to keep arms." So if you think it matters that the AARP supports a limited right for you to bear arms that you can't ever have, you're senile and won't have a problem with them. :)

Gun Control

AARP believes in the Constitutional right to bear arms. But to make the nation safer, we must do what we can to keep guns out of hands of children and criminals. AARP supported the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act, which went into law in 1994 with bi-partisan support, but was allowed to expire this year.

AARP supports measures to eliminate firearm possession by juveniles, convicted domestic abusers and those under domestic violence restraining orders.

Every sane and sensible gun owner should join and support the NRA. It is the major national organization that works most effectively to preserve the right of individuals to own and use firearms. Another effective organization in that respect is the Second Amendment Foundation.

One benefit of joining those two organizations is that the lunatics among gun owners hate them with a passion, so you have some assurance when meeting an NRA member that he is not completely off his rocker and can count every single one of his fingers without a cheat sheet.

I am not old enough to join the AARP myself. I have at least another 40 years before I can.

However I do remember there being another organization for seniors and retired people that was much more pro-gun than the AARP. Try asking at Glocktalk as that is where I saw it.

Lessee... the right to defend myself vs. discounts at fast-food joints. Tough choice. :D

hah! I've joined. So has my wife. Looking forward to "offending" blissninnies and lunatics, both. BTW, define "lunatic"... cuz I'm thinking I might be one. :scrutiny:

Not old enough here, either. But they do send me their literature. I guess I'll be saving up their junk mail to make wet-packs for ballistic tests in the desert.

I've joined that forum, but haven't spent a lot of time over there yet. Guess I should go poke around a bit. Thanks.

I have always enjoyed returning the postage paid envlopes from AARP stuffed with my excessive junk mail with the line "I'm the NRA" across it. I get one every six or seven months :D

As Robert said this does not completely cover where they stand. They support fully, the position of the VPC.

Join the NRA!

Join up! Does some good and the "PO" factor on my wife's liberal friends alone is well worth the membership. annual membership:$25-$35, my wife's liberal friend making a face and going "whose is this!??!?" when she saw my autographed Charlton Heston picture on the fridge: priceless.

I started receiving solicitations to join the AARP (Oops! I just gave away my age!). My consistent response (in their postage-paid envelope, of course) is that I support the Second Amendment to the Constitution of the United States, and AARP does not. Therefore, I decline to join.

Regarding the famed "AARP discounts," I also advise AARP thatmy God-given rights, as confirmed by the U.S. Constitution, are NOT for sale!!

go on rub it in a little more JBT

there is some other org you can join when yer old...where are my glasses....turn that noise down...get off my lawn...huh

what?

Aside from being anti gun, the AARP is nothing but a Socialist organization.

All they are is a bunch of stooges for the welfare state. Old stooges, but stooges none the less.

They support Socialized Medicine, Welfare, Tax increases, gun control ... pretty much anything the DNC says they agree with.

NRA-ILA exists because of the various restrictions that are placed on not for profit corporations with respect to what political endeavors they may or may not engage in. The NRA-ILA was formed for the purpose of separating the political wing, and making a corporate vehicle that can engage in political activities.

As per the law, even though the orgs are affiliated with each other, NRA membership is NOT ILA membership, a fact which a lot of people don't understand, and in that lack of understanding, the ILA winds up chronically underfunded.

Join both.

When you get your NRA magazine each month look for the 'self defense' page.

"armed Citizen" or some such. Take a heavy magic writer and make a big -1
on each situation where the perp ended up dead. Copy or tear out and distribute to the gun haters.

In addition to sending to AARP mail from NRA get a nice pro gun piece and get a few copies. Place those in with the bills you pay each month-credit cards, phone, lights etc tec. My wife asks do you suppose any one reads that stuff'? I dont know but we need to educate others-one by one by one. This is a cheap start esp if you have access to the office copy machine.

"Not old enough here, either. But they do send me their literature. I guess I'll be saving up their junk mail to make wet-packs for ballistic tests in the desert."

they start in bugging you when you're 49 and, regardless of whether you reply to any of their crap, they stop a couple of years afterward. In the past they haven't even nodded toward the second amendment. The language in some of the above posts makes it look like they have decided that they might collect more money in membership fees if they at least appeared to be pro-freedom. I cannot see any benfit in paying dues to these people. I still get to watch their scam insurance ads on cablevision.
I never did get with the concept of people being entitled to discounts and free stuff simply because they haven't died yet- particularly when they've had extra time to save up some money.

As I am, ahem, qualified for the AARP, I get several mailings a year.

I promptly take their business reply envelope, go to our repair shop, fill it with washers or scrap steel, tape it and mail it to them.
