Which is most likely to be accurate out of the box, a Remington 700 Police or a Savage 10FP with accutrigger, both in 308 winchester?

my savage 10fp shot incredibly well out of the box. i have the stock barrel and i can get some hand-loads to group under .3" @ 100 yards. from what i have heard the Remington wont shoot "as" good out of the box but with investment it can defiantly surpass the savage.

The only person who can answer this question is the one who has fired a statistically valid sample (ie. hundreds) of both models, out of the box, under controlled circumstances.
Hopefully he'll be here soon.

to get any mass-produced brrl to shoot sub moa you need to do a proper break-in and work up a load it likes. Both rifles in the op have an excellent chance of being great shooters in the right hands. I can't choose one over the other based soley on expected accuracy.

My understanding is that the M700 Police model is factory-tested for 0.50" accuracy at 100 yards. There is a company that further tunes them for about $1,500.00 additional, and assures a 0.25" accuracy at 100 yards.

I can not speak to the Savage, as I never have owned one. However, I do have a M700 Police, .308 Win. It wears a Nightforce 12-42X56 benchrest scope. At 300 yards, with Lapua brass and projectiles handloaded, I am able to maintain 0.75" for 3 shot groups. I guess I got one of the good one.

That is a heck of a question, both of those are SCARY accurate with any decent factory load, and out of this world acurate with custom handloads, I have seen both of those heavy barrel monsters shoot sub .25 MOA with SMKs. I went with the Savage because I think it is a tad better out the box while the Remington has a slightly stronger aftermarket.

I kind of look at the Remington along the same lines as a 10/22. Its a great, strong gun with a fantastic action, however it might take some (aftermarket) work to get it to realize it's full potential. But then again, I'm a Savage guy without a lot of experience with the Remington 700. All of my Savage rifles have provided 'better than I am' accuracy from the box, though I use them to hunt and not to do benchrest long range shooting. I'm willing to bet that the 700 would be more accurate than I am straight from the box with a little load experimentation though.

Sir, there is no room for logic like that on the Internet. We operate within an empirical evidence free zone here. Move along please! :neener::p
