Which one is a better 1911, Ruger or Remington ?

Whichever one you like better. CDNN Sports has killer deals on the Rem R1 right now and with the $75 rebate the gun is a bargain. Gun Tests rated the R1 higher than the Ruger but that was a sample of one gun from each company. I bought the R1 Enhanced but the SS Ruger is tempting as a 2nd 1911. Pick the one you like best for the price.

Own a R1 and have handled a number of Rugers. I would put them pretty much on the same level, in terms of fit and finish.

Were I buying one, I would go with the Ruger as it comes stock with options I prefer (beaver tail, trigger, safety, etc) but the Remington I have is a sweet gun, and sweet shooter. I won't be dumping it any day soon.

Just making room for a Ruger (or two) in the future.

I think fit and finish is maybe a little better on the ruger. They are set up well and ready to go right out of the box. I am also seeing them regularly for $649 outstanding value!

I can only speak to the Ruger. I recently bought the commander length. It is one of the 'most for the money' 1911's I've seen. It has been absolutely 100% reliable on everything I've fed it and is way accurate. Can't go wrong with a Ruger.

As I said, I don't know about the Remington.

Even though I had to send the first SR1911 I owned back because of a finish problem, I agree with what JR24 wrote:)
I believe that the two makes are also on the same level in terms of accuracy and reliability.
For me, it came down to a matter of preference and I preferred the R1S
The SR1911s have since moved on to other homes.

With all the features, the Ruger has, there is no way it should be selling $650. IMHO closer to $800-$900, but as stated. If you have a gun worth $2000 and one worth $200, if the $200 is reliable and you like it better then the $2000 then you take the $200 one.
Remember there is a reason they make so many different guns, because everyone has different taste.

I owned the R1 and only sold it because it was an even trade for a new EMP 40. I would buy the R1 commander, "the new $600.00 one" in a heartbeat, and may buy it from buds for $600 + a 75 dollar rebate. I never fired the Ruger. But in general don't care for Rugers current pistols. The LC9 was a disappointment, but everyone is entitled to a bad one once in a while.
I would like to fire the Ruger prior to committing to the R1. The R1 I had shot in the 10 ring, from 7 yards to 25 yards easily right from the first mag.One of the best triggers for an inexpensive 1911.

I have both the R1 and the Ruger. We r not exactly comparing apples 2 apples here because for about the same price Ruger gives you a lot more for the money. Trigger, hammer, beaver tail sights, all upgrades. More importantly the Ruger has no fire safety block pin stupid thingy so the trigger is a little smoother and crisp. Dollar for dollar Ruger is a much better value.

In my experience the Springfield Milspec is the best bang for your buck. I have all 3 of them Ruger, R1 and the Parkerized Springer is tighter, best shooter,
and has that original 1911 WW 1 feel. But what do I know, I only have 6 1911s,hehehehehe

Loved both the Remingtons ive oqwned. Still own one. Very well built, accurate and reliable. Plus you get a free barrel.

I also left out, that I like the option of having a Blued gun. Although stainless is nice, I prefer Blued guns.

I'd pick an SR1911 over an R1 any day, though I openly admit I may be a tad biased. I'm not a huge fan of Remington to put it lightly and don't trust their QC. I'd rather pay the same amount of money for a Ruger.

Plus I like the finish on the Rugers more.

I DID NOT NOTICE where anyone pointed out the fact they both are the same gun as both slides and both frames are Ruger castings.
Do you have a source on that? Everything I've read has stated the frames are made in-house at Remington.

It is bs.

Remington casts their frames in house. The only part they ever outsourced was the barrel, which they now make in house.

For the guys suggesting other brands, the OP asked about Ruger and Remington. And do realize that CDNN Sports is selling the Rem R1 for $477 right now and the R1 Enhanced for $637!!! This is allot of very good gun for the money and they are USA made. At these prices Colts and Springfields cost allot more. Here is a pic of my R1 Enhanced. And just checked the SS R1 is $523 and the SS R1 Enhanced is $675. At these prices it would be hard to go wrong.
