Ok, let me just start this with stating that I have several S&W revolvers and not one Glock as of yet. But, I really like those S&W revolvers. I do own several semi auto's but they are Sigs.

Here's my quandry. I've been wanting to get a Glock 21 for a bit now, but just haven't as of yet. Then the other day I watch American Shooter and they covered the new S&W 500 with the 4 inch bbl. Oh man that got my blood pumping. I was really jonsing to try it. I even called up the S&W Public Range to see if you could rent one there and unfortunately they can't. It seems that the backstop is rated for it, but the roof isn't and they are afraid someone my punch a round outside the building that way. Oh well, the one down side to shooting a 50 cal revolver.

So should I get the Glock or the S&W, S&W or the Glock? Damn these decisions. I know someone will say "Get Both". But, financially that will be impossible. Then of course there is the alway present MA laws so if I got the Glock 21 it would have to be an older model as new Glocks are not allowed by the AG of this state. So I'd have to wait until one came up for sale. They do frequently, but they demand a premium price. Hummmm, what to do what to do. What do you guys think?

Those are two very different pistols. I would get the glock because it is more versatile and much less expensive. That said, I sure would love that revolver too. If you have the money to buy it AND pay for ammo, go for it.

You stated the G21 commanded a premium, just out of curiousity how much $$$?

The 500 is the coolest handgun on the planet. If you have the disposable income, buy it.

Uhm... well.. I gotta ask, what's the PURPOSE of owning either?

If you lived in AK or somewhere way out west where big bears were an issue I'd think differently... BUT... for practical concerns, unless you travel outside MA into the wildnerness, what is there around you that .45 won't take care of?

Being that I live in the LP of Michigan I find the G21 a wondeful lightweight (but big) gun to tote around on my belt when wandering in the woods. Never had to use it, but its very sufficient for the bi-podal hairless two legged ape and any four legged critter I'm supposed to find around these parts. Oh, and I get 14 shots.

You also get fairly reasonable range fodder to have fun with your toy (which is most likely all you'll ever have to shoot it for) -- so the G21 wouldn't have to just be a safe queen.

If you want something pratical (unless you stomp around bear country a lot) then go with the G21. If you want something exotic and expensive go with the S&W 500.

Maybe I'm biased but I see you trying to chose between something very UNpractical and something very practical!

However I presume you have something else already in .45 or .357mag.... and if so then I'd say "bases are covered" -- go get what you want to scratch that itch.

I often find myself tempted to purchase an additional handgun and I consider it on the basis of "what can the new handgun do that the current handguns won't?". I'm not a collector, I use my firearms as tools, so my approach probably won't work too well if you collect.

LOL - I have to agree with P95Carry. I already own a nice 1911 so the 45 is covered and I have a Sig 229 that I have a 357Sig bbl for, so this is strictly a wanting thing.

As to paying a premium, I'll probably have to fork out $600-$700 for a used G21 that has been in the state since the ban went into effect in the mid 90s. Hell, a used G17 that old gets $500 or more here in MA.

I'm also thinking that the S&W 500 might get banned here one day as well. It would seem that anything listed as a 50 cal is shortly for the chopping block going by what is happening in the PRK. I sure hope not though.

Hummmm, I'm seriously leaning towards the 500!!!

the gun store I was at today ran out of smith and wesson .500 magnums in all barrel lenghts. I guess bear hunting is picking up here in Michigan :neener:

500 Magnum Ammo = $30 per 12 shots

.45ACP Ammo = $30 per 150 shots

Do you want a 'shootin' gun or a 'lookin' gun?

All cost estimates are averaged, rounded, and scaled to fit my analogy

500 Mag

I love my S&W 500 mag, ammo is high thats why i roll my own. I load for about 27 cents a round, at that price i shoot it a lot, I love to shoot at bowling pins, free standing it will go in one side and out the other.

Get the Glock. Allot more practical, cheaper to shoot.I'm sorry I still haven't forgotten the S&W agreement with Slick Willie. There will not be any new Smiths coming home with me.I know S&W has new American owners.I'm happy to hear and know that. On the other hand I haven't seen or read where the new owners are trying to get out of this rediculious agreement made.Until I see differently the new Smith's no long exist.I'll scarf up a old Smith (pre-agreement) in a heartbeat.

I love shooting the SW500. I reload for it so it is not such a problem with ammo cost. That is the way I would go

Glock's don't fit my hands so I can't say I would every buy one but they have earned a good rep.

If your range, or any other range for that matter, wont allow you to shoot the S&W 500, I'd get the Glock. Why buy a gun you cannot shoot?

This leads me to believe that they wont allow 50 cal firing there.
