Which one should I buy first- Glock 21 vs S&W 500

A Plastic Fantastic versus a Big Revolver. There was a time when that would have been a tough one for me too. I had a half dozen Berettas and several other autos, then found out how much fun wheelguns are. The rest, as they say, is history. Now I have two 1911s and the rest are all six shooters.

(Rockrivr1, correct me if I'm wrong)

Browns Fan, Yep you are absolutely correct. They will not rent a 500 for you to try there, nor will they let you shoot one if you own it. The thing thats tough is that not only is it the S&W public range, but it's also their retail center as well. A few of the 500s are in the display case just begging you to buy them. The one thing I don't like about the place is that I can usually buy the same gun from a gun store cheaper then they sell them at the retail center. You'd think it be the other way around. Go figure.

I'm going to break his rules and suggest a Glock 20 instead of a 21.

The 10mm round is pretty stinking impressive, the only way it doesn't surpass the .45 is the diameter and weight of the bullet.

You'll love the power, the flat shooting, the nice *bang*.
Buy a hunting barrel for it and you're good to go.

And yes I'm a 10mm junkie, I have a glock 20 and a 10mm EAA Witness.

CDNN has older gen glock 20's (LEO tradins) on sale for $369 ea (+$40 for night sites) in their current catalog.

And btw, after you buy the glock 20 you can turn around and pick yourself up a S&W 610 so it won't get lonely ;)

My only wheel gun is a 10" .44 ruger super redhawk.

toss up

well thats a tough one i have both my glock has super2's on it so you get 15+1 capacity in 45acp versus 5 of the strongest pistol rounds
both are to big to conceal
and think what could happen if u ever used the 500 for self defense you are justified in killing the perp but your bullet went str8 through them and hit someone else so u are going to jail
but then again there must be sumthing to be said for having sumthin on your hip u can kill an elephant with

Get the big Smith. Now if you aren't experienced with big bore magnums then you may be in for quite a shock. Watching one being fired on TV will give you no idea of pulling the trigger for yourself.

I'm a big S&W fan, but of older models. You said you're "leaning" towards the .500 anyway, so get it. If it turns into a safe queen, you can always trade it on the glock. I'd love to shoot one, but I have no current "need" for a .50 cal revolver. If I want to sting my hand, I can always shoot a few 300gr rounds out of my 629 MG.
I currently own one 1911, 1/2 a dozen older smiths and a ruger super blackhawk. I certainly qualify as a revolver fan. This Saturday, I ordered a Glock 20. Go figure. :D

Wow, someone dug this post out from the grave. Since I originally posted this questions I first bought the Glock 21 because if was a deal I couldn't pass up and then ran across another deal less then a month later on the 500. The deal for the 500 was so good that I had to jump all over it as well. I was REALLY broke for the next several weeks after that. Love shooting both, but the 500 is leaps and bounds more excitement when shooting. Especially with the 400 gr or bigger loads. Then again, the Glock is WAY cheaper to shoot. Oh well. It's only money, right? :uhoh:

You gotta start reloading my man. I shoot my 500 for about $0.18 per round, and that's buying the primers and powder locally.

I hear ya EddieCoyle. A few guys and myself got together over at Northeast Shooters and are taking a reloading class at AG Guns in Lowell. I've always learned things better by being hands on. Learning from a book could work, but I'd probably make a mistake or something and I definitely don't want to make a mistake while doing this.

If you don't mind me asking, what type of press are you using to reload your 500? I'm noticing that some don't offer that option.

I'm using a Hornady Lock-N-Load AP press with RCBS dies. I'll send you a PM with some sources for components.

I use a RCBS rockchucker press and RCBS dies on my 500 S&W loads as I mentioned earyler in the post my cost is around 27 cents a round.

Cav Soldier....................ALLONS

I watch American Shooter and they covered the new S&W 500 with the 4 inch bbl. Oh man that got my blood pumping.

It'll get your bones cracking too. I've seen a bunch of 500's up on the for sale pages locally, fired once dropped once. With that level of power you really need to get the full size X frame with the long barrel.

How many $/trigger pull is the .500sw?

Not that .45acp is cheap, and you're obviously rich (probably have a suit and a car and stuff too) so not that ammo cost matters or anything, but submit you will have more fun with the twenty-one.

I'd say unless you need that .500 for something (like puttin' meat on your table) then get the Glock 21. You'll be able to afford the ammo a lot better and practice with it won't be so fatiguing. After all, if you want to use the .500 for anything, you're going to need practice. Lots of it. And THAT, my friend, will be quite expensive.
