All,

I have a rifle in the recall for the 40x trigger. I read a lot of Timney, Rifle Basix, Jewell and another one or two. Which is your recommendation for a replacement and why please. I don't have any trigger replacement or experience shooting any of those mentioned so I'm hoping someone will chime in with their experience.

I want a smooth faced trigger that's adjustable, drop in, and compatible with the safety.

I did use the search, but after an hour or so, I'm just going to ask.

My gunsmith says there's nothing better than a Jewell. You can dial them down to ounces.

Im quite satisfied with the Timney I put in my 700. Not as light as some Jewell triggers, I think mine breaks at 1.5-2lbs, but also $100 cheaper. Installation took less than 5 minutes, very easy.

Jewel is great for the bench. Don't let it get dirty.
Xtreme cg Jackson mod 22 is my favorite 2 stage trigger by far.
Timney single stage triggers are well regarded and prob the most common trigger I see (non factory)
Huber are also gaining a following but I have no experience with them.

There are several cheaper ones that may also be good.

My Walker was replaced with a Rifle Basix at 3 lbs. and because I purchased directly, they allowed me to specify the poundage. Feels as good as its predecessor and a pound and a half lighter. An inexpensive upgrade for a hunting grade 700 that I can recommend.

The new gold standard of replacement rifle triggers is the Bix'n Andy. On a scale of 10, with the Bix'n Andy a 10, the Jewell rates about a 6 with most others below 5. The problem however is that they are rather pricey.

I had not heard of a Bix'n Andy.
I surely admired the Xtreme Jackson I saw.
My only aftermarket triggers are Rifle Basix which are pretty, well, basic.

what is it about the bixn andy that makes it twice as good as a jewel?
never heard of it

My 40X custom uses a Jewell. It is supreme. Probably best trigger I've ever used.

Quoted from above post:

Good question, best answer is to try both and compare. You'll be astonished by the difference. But to give you some idea, the difference is somewhat like the difference between a Jewel and ordinary factory triggers. Not surprised you haven't heard of Bix'n Andy, as they've only been around 2-3 years. Remember that only a few years back noone had heard of a Jewel either. Currently, Bix'n Andy are mostly used by Benchrest and other elite shooters. I'm replacing the triggers on my BR rifles one by one as I sell off the Jewels. Replacing them all at once would be a pretty big hit at nearly $400. per. In no way am I criticizing Jewel triggers as they have served me well for several years, but technology and know-how marches on and the Bix'n Andy represents a newer and significantly better development.

Timney 510 is well regarded, drop-in, and adjustable from (IIRC) 1.5-5 pounds. Hard to beat it at around $130.

Jewell triggers are ultra popular for benchrest rifles, but like taliv said, it needs to be kept ultra clean, so it might not be great for a field rifle. Jewell triggers for the 700 also seem to be out of stock at many of the more reputable online dealers, currently.

Ideally, you make this decision knowing the purpose of the rifle and the conditions in which it will be used.

Trigger

I put a Timney on my 700 and really like it, about 3.5 lbs pull and no issues after about 5 years.

I would not want any less pull for tactical uses (non benchrest)

I recently replaced my Rem X-Mark Pro triggers with Timney 510s. Order from them and they'll set the pull weight at their factory...and they have wonderful customer service.

Is your rifle a 700 or a 40X? The recall was for X-Mark Pro triggers. The 40X is a different animal.

I wondered about this also. I've got an early 700 XCR Compact Tactical which came wit the 40X trigger. When I checked their website, my SN came in as being subject to the recall, but when I called REM CS they had me describe my trigger (ribbed or smooth) and then sold me it's the 40X and exempt.

I have a Jewell and a couple Timney triggers with flat blade and nickle plated triggers. The Jewel is lighter and crisper and for $100 more it should be. The nickle timney easily goes safely to 1 .5 pounds on both rifles and the flat blade gives better control, it is very close to the Jewell but I feel the little heavier pull weight makes it safer and less prone to dirt problems . If I had a bench rifle to compete with I'd go Jewell , maybe on a varmint gun too as that is what my Jewell is on and I keep it clean and shoot from a mechanical rest. On a fighting or field gun Timney all the way!

I bought two Timney triggers for my M700 police .308 Win. One was (I think) a 4 ounce. Too light for me. The other was a 1.5 pound. It was just right. The 4-ounce model did not have a safety. That was a concern for me. As such, I simply left the bolt open until I was ready to fire. I would never have a safety-less trigger again. Regardless, I was happy with Timney.

Another vote for the Timney here. I put one on my 700 VLS rather than send it in and couldn't be happier. Yes, the Jewell's are better. No argument there, but for the extra money? Not so much IMO.

Great input. This rifle is more bench than field as it's a .308 HB from Red Hawk rifles. However, I do want to keep the field in mind as I want reliability over everything. Sounds like a Jewell is out then.

I like how it shoots now, but I don't want to send it back when I can just upgrade it and never worry again. The 40x trigger is pretty good for me, but to get it light you back out the setscrew and it then touches your finger, so I'll scrap it and move on.

Thanks, I'll be looking up the others listed and making my decision soon.

I put a jewel in my 700 and I don't think I could find a better trigger.I put a rifle basix in my model 70 22-250 and don't think it was any better than the factory trigger.

I went with a Jewell with safety for my .308. (Remington Hunter Varmint Rifle (RHVR) includes top lever safety and bottom bolt release. Fits Remington 700/40x rifles, right-hand actions only.) The gun is one of those Dick's Sporting Goods exclusive ADL Varminter models with the blow-molded plastic stock. Replaced the stock (with a Choate Sniper IIRC) and replaced the Remington-branded pos scope. It's way too heavy to lug around the mountains, but very nice off a bipod. Dirt in the trigger has not been an issue - the stock raises the action up nicely.
