Hello everyone,

I'm looking for the best price-to-performance ratio (in this case, accuracy or moa).

We can be talking about the rifle "out of the box"/unmodded.

Or, we can also be talking about the rifle decked out with aftermarket parts, etc.

Let's talk about different price ranges. I'm still not sure about how much I want to spend on a rifle yet, but I'm sure I want the best accuracy for my money.

I may consider competition shooting later down the road...

Thanks all in advance!

+1 on savage

i hope you realize you started another 'comparing apples to oranges' pissing-match forums. let the flaming commence!

and welcome to the highroad

$140.00 Marlin 60, out of the box, with a $9.99 tasco scope @ 25 yards with Remington Thunderbolt will do this:

I have $1000 in my Savage that includes an aftermarket barrel and stock as well as the scope. It will outshoot any rifle on THR. Just click the link in my sig line.

Oh! I hope I didn't open a can of worms...

But remember I'm not only looking at "out-of-the-box" options.

I'm also looking at options that can be modified with, for example, aftermarket parts.

most accurate rifle out of the box?

Its either a CZ or a Savage. I was never a big fan of either but pound for pound, dollar for dollar both are hard to beat. The CZ is basically a square bridge, small ring mauser if you like to stick with tradition. I have a 550 with a Mannlicher stock in 7X57. Out of the box, with the right reload, I get 1/2 MOA. The rifle comes with a very nice set trigger. However set triggers as a lot will have somewhat longer lock time. If you do not like the set trigger feature that function can be adjusted out to make the rifle function conventionally. All CZ rifles come with forged barrels. This kind of accuracy with a full stocked rifle is absolutely unheard of. I've seen a number of other CZ rifles and all would easily shoot 1 MOA right of the box.

I have never been a big Savage fan. The bolt and trigger group look like something that escaped from a Russian car factory. Picked up one in a trade just to see if all the gun rags were being honest. Its damn hard to argue with results. Adjust the trigger down to 2&1/2 pounds and you've got a pretty good rifle. I have two heavy barrel Savage varmint rifles...one in .308 and the other .22-250. The worst group either rifle has ever fired was 3/4 of an inch at 100 yards. The best group? How about five shots at 38/100 of an inch! Yep...they are ugly but damn do they shoot!!!

Either way...its hard to buy this kind of accuracy right out of the box!

Savage has a high end model that I think looks better than any Remington. If you want pretty though you have to go with the CZ full stock.

hard to argue that this is a great factory feature in the newer savage rifles. the accu-trigger is really user friendly and has a very nice adjustment range that will get your pull where you want it to be

to my knowledge i dont think i have ever fired a CZ, but between all the guys on here you will hear nothing but good things

remington is a great rifle and has the x-mark pro trigger, but i really havent heard anything too amazing about it that would make me choose it over another savage or a CZ

just let this thread grow over the next day or 2 and youll have some good input

" Savage has a high end model that I think looks better than any Remington."
Does "kinda" look like an old BDL eh?
Don't own any Savages, but a few "Savage" guys that I shoot with, shoot with me or better. And I paid a lot more than they did!Maybe I'll practice what I preach someday??

If you want lots of aftermarket stuff, Ruger10/22.
Are you seriuos? Not to be rude, but a lot of money into a 10/22 can make it a very accurate firearm, but nowhere near a well modded savage. The F/TR is (has gotten, i saw it) .3MOA capable out of the box, and probably their rifles could do better, with new barrels and such. I would like to see a savage precision action with a Broughton barrel in some good stock...that would be a shooter.

If you want guaranteed MOA accuracy then it's either a TC Icon, Tikka, Sako or Weatherby sub-MOA.

Savage also has a very good general reputation for accuracy (though without any sort of guarantee), then I'd rank Remington and Browning next. After that IMO it's a crap shoot.

I just bought a TC Icon and the overall average of sixteen 3-shot groups at 100 yards off the bench with 4 different deer-specific factory loads is 1.01" center to center measured with a micrometer. The ammo spans premium grade down to to standard spec. ammo. That's pretty impressive, although I've only shot Federal and Hornady to date. I'm sure it'll grow once I try standard grade Remington and Winchester ammo, though.

Savage. I too have $1000 in mine and it shoots better than anything else I've shot. With better glass I could really stretch it out.

Maybe it's not as good as a $4000 hot rod sniper rig,but I'll never know.

buy a $400.00 Vanguard, put a good stock & trigger on it with good glass & never look back. you'll have a tackdriver that looks good for a grand or less. that's your basic moa rifle with a few upgrades to make it very sub-moa.

Ruger 77's with an aftermarket trigger shoot very well. I have an old two-tone 77V in .223 that will shoot 5 shot .3" groups at 100 yards. My Savage Model 12 in .243 will too. All my CZ's shoot well. YMMV.

On the surplus side, Swiss K31. Less than $300 will get you one of the sweetest shooting rifles you'll ever see.

out of the box?.....hmmmmm....Well, the most accurate rifle I have ever shot straight out of the box was an old Savage 110E in .243 Win. Still shoots .4 MOA with factory Federal Ammo. I will say that this was a total fluke and pretty uncommon with box-stock rifles though. My F/TR Savage in .308 did not shoot that well straight out of the box...

T2E

I have a Savage MkII BTVS that shoot tiny little groups. I've gotten .8 MOA five shot groups out of it. It's stock, unless you count lightening the Accutriger. I have a cheapish scope on it too.

Tikka T3 $459.00, mine will put 3 shots inside a penny at 100yds with cheap Winchester power point ammo.

Rimfire I'd have to say the best I've had is Savage 93R17 (17hmr)
It shoots real tight groups.
Centerfire, the best I have ever shot for groups was a Winchester Model 70 "Black Shadow",it was a cheap rifle that I loaned a guy some money on,he bought it back..but that thing shot 1/2 MOA with 130grain bullets.
(limited experience with target shooting)
I've got a 700 in 30/06 shoots okay. 1-1 1/2 groups.
Got a Ruger M77 in .280,shoots 3/4 MOA (140grain Remington ammo)
Moms got a Ruger M77 in .270WSM,that P.O.S. shoots 2-3" MOA :(
