I bought a Remington 700 SPS Tactical and a Nikon Bushmaster 3-9X40 Scope. I need to mount it but don't know which mounts are bad, good., prefered etc. I'll probably use this gun for hog and deer hunting. Your help is greatly appreciated. I have a gunsmith who is saying I may want to have it bedded? What do you think? I has the 20" barell and the Hogue stock. Thanks.

mounts are mounts for the most part. for hunting rifles i like talley lightweights, and for varmint rifles (heavy rifles and big scopes) i like warne.

never worked on a hogue stock, but i bed all my stocks as a matter of course, and i would be tempted to try it w/ a hogue.

If you are going to pack that new rig you probably want to go with some two peice light weight bases, and rings, aluminum most likley. The one peice steel bases and rings can easily go close to a pound in weight.

Talley Burris Luepold Millet weaver all make quality scope mounting systems, fun to choose huh?

Shoot the rifle before you send it off for bedding and see how it groups you may not need to bed it. The bedding also increases the weight of the rifle!

I like using the Leupold 2 piece bases and Leupold dual dovetail bases. Both rings twist in 90 degrees and are extremely solid. Just my .02 though.

My gunsmith thinks the Leupolds stink. He showed me why on a 7Mag Sako that was my dad's that just won't shoot any more. They will loosen over time in a heavy magnum rifle. He recommends Weaver. I just put some on a Mod 700 7mm-08 the other day. P/N 35 & 36 for the bases. Just pick your finish - (M)atte, (G)loss, (S)tainless.

I like Leupolds rings and bases (standard, steel). Solid, well built and last forever.

For a hunting rifle, I love the talley one piece. They are light, and the one piece design just gives one less point of failure.
I actually use the same ones on my 700 5R target rifle, although if I were trying to squeeze out every ounce of perfection, badger or leupold mark 4 would probably be better. Much more expensive though.

Talleys are strong but expensive.

Leupold standard are solid but will shoot loose on the big .300's if you shoot alot.

Weavers are inexpensive but bulky.

I used Leupold QR's on mine. It's a more solid mount than the standard Leupold and I like having the ability to take the scope off without losing zero. If you don't mind spending money though, get the Talley in whatever configuration you like.
