I am in FL, and had a license to carry a firearm for 38-39 yrs now, in NYC, and FL. If I were to move again, I have been thinking Texas. They seem to think more the way I do there than here. Although it's a pleasure here compared to NY.
Being retired wher is a warm state with friendlly carry laws. Preferablly Carry, not CCW. One thing about NY, if you were able to get a license, it seemed a lot less of a pain in the butt when you walked around in the sense that I was never stopped or asked to see a license even when dining, if I removed my suit jacket or outer garment.
Here it seems people are more worried about where they are going to hide their gun, than weather or not they cleaned it. I would like to be in a gun friendlly state with good weather in my golden years. Wher my dogs can run, without getting killed by an over zealous person with a gun, "they are on my property" and they are supposed to bark when anyone opens the gate. That's their job. Here in FL it seems like they shoot them first and then enter the gate. My dogs are Labs and anyone with half a brain knows they are more likelly to lick you to death than bite you. 35 yrs I haven't had a dog bite anyone, and I have had many. So guns and dogs and warm weather.
Just a dream or is there such a place in this country anymore.
I have a friend in New Mexico, and he can shoot out his winow if he chooses to, but he's in the anal gland area of the state. Cactus and Meth labs, and illegals, as far as the eye can see.
I don't care if there is a Mall in 1000 miles of the place as long as it's a nice town. Suggestions, or do I have to start my own State.
That may be next if this president keeps pushing us out to sea.

Probably Arizona. Open carry, concealed carry okay without a license. Lots of open country but the border area has well known problems with smugglers.

Other options would be Vermont and Alaska where no license is needed to carry. But they're a mite on the cool side.

Michigan is a gun friendly state, but not so warm. Open Carry allowed, concealed carry is easy and relatively inexpensive, and we recognize most CC licenses from other states.

Not my state of North Carolina. We can't carry concealed into many places like establishments that serve alcohol, public gatherings, events that charge admission (movies etc.) and the list goes on...

Open carry isn't illegal, nor is it explicitly legal. We just can't "go armed to the terror of the public," which is highly subjective. Towns like the People's Republic of Cary ban concealed firearms on town owned lands:

  • North Carolina law does not allow the open carry of a firearm at certain events such as public parades, funeral processions, picket lines or demonstrations. For more, see NCGS. 14-277.2.
  • The Town of Cary does not allow the open or concealed carry of a weapon while on any public property within our community including on greenways, in public parks or Town facilities, or in Town-owned parking lots. The ordinance does not allow the open carry of any firearm on public sidewalks or right-of-ways. See Section 22-51(a) of the Town of Cary Code of Ordinances
Thankfully, the NRA is finally backing some legislature to help us out here in NC...starting with a solid castle doctrine.

It may not be an issue for you, depending on your interests, but here in Tennessee a Cheif Law Enforcement Officer must sign off on an NFA form if you submit one.

[DonnieBaker] It's state law! [/DonnieBaker]

I love answering this question, to see if I can remember everything.

Utah has both extremes of weather, but the southern part is usually 15+ degrees warmer than Salt Lake. As for letting your dogs run free, it depends on where you are. Smaller town are more sympathetic than larger ones.

Castle doctrine
stand your ground law
You can open carry anywhere you can carry concealed
Your employer cannot ban a gun in your vehicle in the parking lot.
No duty to inform police you are carrying. (Although I still do, it gets me out of tickets,)
Carry in schools, k-university
carry in church as long as you're not a mormon
carry in banks
carry in bars
state has preemption
state law forbids confiscation in time of crisis
John Browning's mansion is for sale
plenty of desert and mountain terrain
carry in National Parks
Permit valid in 34 states, last I checked,
if the direction of the President's pushing upsets you, we are pushing back HARD.
Kill all the coyotes you can, no license, no season, no limit
We have tabled legislation to do away with permits. It will likely go through soon.

I personally plan to build Fort Deckard out in the sagebrush where I can shoot clay birds off my back deck and no one will care.

BTW, your buddy in Mexico, he must be way out in the Agaves, if any of US crossed the border and got caught with a single round of ammo in the car, we would probably be spending time in a Mexican jail. One day of that is too many.

For a gun collector most any gun friendly state will do. For a SHOOTER/SPORTSMAN I would have to put in a plug for my state of Idaho. No matter where you are in Idaho you never have to go far to find public land that you can shoot on. You don't have to go far to find pretty much anything that you can hunt. There are elk, deer, antelope, sheep, moose, etc. If you are a bird shooter there is pretty much any fowl that you can imagine hunting. If you are an angler then you won't be dissapointed. The only downside that I complain about Idaho is the snow. I am the type of guy that would be happy in Florida if it was like Idaho. That said, I am willing to put up with snow just for the privilege to live in this wonderful state.

You're gonna have a hard time improving on things in Florida. Most folks probably wouldn't believe it, but it's one of the most pro-gun states in the US. The issues you raise are probably more to do with your particular area. Obviously people are gonna be more liberal in the bigger cities and moreso the further south you go. I had no idea how good I had it with so many well-stocked, well-reputed gunshops in the Orlando area. Here, I can't match in a 100mile radius what I had in Florida within a half hour from home.

I vote Alaska - but then I'm biased

As to cool - we've been warmer and with less snow than some of you folks. Besides - when its cold you can wear as many layers as you want. Where its hot - you take off too many layers and they call the law :)

If I had to pick to move from AK, as it stands I would prefer AZ and then VT

I grew up in Florida, and can think of no gun-regulation-reason I'd wanna leave. It's not known as "The Gunshine State" for nothing. True, OC is not yet freely permitted, but it looks like it's coming. In fact, New Mexico didn't even have provisions like ours for concealed-carry until 2008.
Your issue is about letting your dogs run loose, not about guns.

My state is pretty liberal when it comes to gun laws. We can have a loaded rifle, one on the chamber, in your truck while hunting any game just as an example. Last week-end a buddy of mine from Minnesota brought his rifle with him and while looking around sport shops he found a good deal on a scope he has been wanting. We went out to the parking lot of the strip mall and got his rifle and walked back to the store. On our way back to his truck he said, "where else can a guy carry a rifle thru a crowded parking lot and not have to kiss concrete after a SWAT team swoops down on ya"? However, a guy does have to plow/shovel and live with snow for possibily 8 months out of a year.

To add to this Michigan statement, if you have a license to carry a concealed pistol you can legally carry your pistol openly in a pistol free zone.

The best place for a shooter is definitely my home state, IL. Especially if you live in Chicago.

You don't have to worry about carry laws, because all carry is outlawed across the state. You know you'll be safe from assault, since criminals obey the law - isn't that great!? So leave your gun at home, you won't need it. Especially in Chicago's ganglands.

The county government has been kind enough to ensure we can't possess "assault" weapons - i.e. no pistol grips or 11+ round magazines. This is to keep you from spraying bullets from the hip at school children. This is for your own good, since you can't be trusted. You can thank us later.

The city will do you the service of collecting a fee for each and every firearm you own, and will even let you register it (at only one of their police stations, between the hours of 11:27-11:28 on odd numbered days within months ending in "z").

If you don't register your firearm, they will kindly send a friendly squad of task force officers to break down your door, tie up you and your family (for your safety) and take possession of your firearms. Again, for your convenience and safety.

The state police will issue you a FOID card if you fill out your paperwork correctly, enclose a photo of exactly the right size (which they won't use), and let you wait for 60+ days. This card is for the privilege of owning, transporting, or even touching a firearm. Again, for your convenience. This is a service we offer all our residents.

And if you buy a firearm here, you won't even be burdened with needing to take it home that day! You can wait 3 days and come back and get it later.

All this and more can be yours if you join us in the fine state of IL.

mstrat took the words outta my mouth. the only people here that will shoot your dog is the gangbangers or dick daley's security force since there the only ones allowed to carry.Illinois land of the uh lincoln.

And there is legislation in the works (I found this out today) to eliminate Pistol Free Zones entirely.

I moved to Kentucky because at the time I moved the Brady Bunch had Kentucky tied for last place on their list.
No, no! forget Kentucky, it's awful ... stay away.

And Gary, hush son. We don't want all them furriners movin' here. We need to keep our paradise to ourselves.

Hmmm, lesee. Shall Issue CCDW permit. A permit to carry, not only a pistol or revolver, but almost any deadly weapon. Brass Knuckles, Lead Pipe, Blackjack, Throwing Stars, Nunchucks, almost anything you can think of as long as it doesn't explode. Statewide open carry, in-car carry (in open view or in the glove box if you don't have a CCDW). Castle Doctrine that extends your home to your automible. Others too numerous to mention.

And do we love our guns! According to an 18 month study of NICS checks, Kentucky ranked first by a HUGE margin. 1.34 NICS checks per resident. Utah ranked a distant second with 0.303 checks per resident and Montana was third with 0.257 checks per resident.

Hunting, fishing ... we have it all. Kentucky has more miles of fresh water rivers and streams than any state other than Alaska. Our fish are so aggressive you've gotta hide behind a tree just to bait your hook.
