...if you only wanted to keep one: A DSA Carbine or a Savage 10FP (.308)/Kahles 6x42?
Sorry for the weak decision-making skills, but I like them both exactly equally, but only hit the rifle range about once a month (I'm more of a handgun type) and I'd like to perfect just one. The purpose is a range gun and hopefully nothing else, but it's often a benefit to be prepared just in case.

I'd keep the FAL. Ready for my eminently practical reasoning.........
Zombie hoardes.....nope.
SHTF......nope.
Self defense......nope.
Mall ninjas......nope.
and the reason is........

The FAL is more likely to become restricted in some way shape or form long before a nice friendly bolt action. Sure eventually they will go after your precision, long range killing machine but chances are all the reasonable people will vote for restrictions on your semi-automatic, military style, shootin' from the hip, bullet spewing, baby killing, death dealing, evil black plastic, nightmare of modern, mass destruction weaponry.

There. My 2 cents. Basically if you get rid of the bolt gun and decided it was a bad decision five years from now, chances are it will be relatively easy and cheap to rectify the situation. The FAL, well you never know.

I'll buy the Carbine if ya want to sell it.:D

Hard decision.............................

I would keep both.

You can't compare a bolt action and semi-auto carbine.

Keep the FAL, you can always get another 308 bolt action in the future, but the semi 308's may be banned some day.

I have a 10FP that I shoot competitions with as well as deer hunt. I know they can be made to shoot well without a lot of work.

I go the opposite of the others and vote for the 10FP. Someone once said only accurate rifles are interesting.

A lot of ranges don't allow rapid fire. A semi-auto won't matter if thats the case.

I would keep both, even if I didn't shoot one very often(as evidenced by what I have in my safe).

However, if I was choosing one, I would go with the FAL simply because if the bans get tighter, a semi auto rifle will be one of the next on the list.

Bolt action "hunting" rifles will be one of the last we lose.

The DS arms FAL is quite a bit more expensive, right? The problem is, as a range gun, I prefer bolt-actions. Learning how to reflexively work that bolt makes you more aware of each shot going downrange, IMHO.

The FALs are certainly legendary, and the DS Arms one seems to be the best available.

PerFECT a .223 bolt-gun for the range. Much easier to feed and live with.

Use the two .308's for whatever you got them for.

My answer, of course, does indicate another rifle purchase... :D

edited to add: Those are two very nice black rifles you have there!

Blasphemy!

Ahem, anyways. Sell the bolt, keep the FAL. Reliable, accurate, more likely to be banned and it's not a lot of fun(IMO of course) to have to reload every five rounds and work the bolt all the time. (Although that doesn't stop me from buying far too many Mil-Surp rifles than I'll ever need)

Yikes!
I wasn't trying to blaspheme...:D

What has been said about the gun laws and keeping the FAL for now is good.
Having the autoloader if the laws change is a step ahead. Getting another bolt gun might be easier at that time if and when such dreaded legislation occurs.

My point, which I'll clarify now, is that having BOTH of the .308's that are already paid for is good insurance.
This leaves the owner with TWO potent rifles with ammo commonality.

Getting another rifle that is truly a 'range gun', opens up the possibility of using the other common (at this time) military/police ammo in .223 that is less expensive to shoot and easier on the shooter at the range...
A range only rifle with a longer bbl., bigger/better scope, etc. was the idea I had in mind.
Just attempting to maximize the idea.

If sticking to the basic question, get rid of the FAL if you want a range rifle, or keep the FAL if you want to be prepared.
You'll have either a slow shooting defense rifle or a high-capcity, less accurate range rifle, I guess! ;)

(I say get a .223 Savage target rifle to 'enhance' your experience with the .308 version, or you could get a .223 AR15... Cheers.)

Since the thread lives on... Still can't decide which means to keep them both. Kinda enjoy shooting the Savage more, but both round it out. Maybe I'll get more range time later in life.
My wife thanks you.:barf:
