while camping and during the specific parts of hunting season that allows it. both these instances are on private land. i am unsure as to the legality of doing so on public land, but im fairly sure its illegal as i dont think anyone can open carry in public in NY other than police and the like

Here in NH

open carry is legal. I have a CCW license. When en route to my office at 0600 I'll often not bother to conceal if I don't plan on stopping anywhere. At home I often open carry unless there are guests. I too think open carry frightens the uninformed/brainwashed, so why court trouble. In some places, it's different and no one cares.
Not around here though.

I would not. I would rather have the advantage of surprise. If you open carry, you had better be VERY fast if a perp attempts to victimize you anyway. Around Atlanta you are liable to get shot in the back or knocked in the head first to attempt to get your money AND your gun.

Huh. Think I ought to move to Arizona. Sounds like a pretty nice deal.

I live in Southern California. I'm pretty sure if you carry openly here the police just shoot you. :p

In my state I can carry either way...........

No fuss, no muss. I tend to carry concealed and open carry during bear and deer season. This is a courtesy for women and children from alien nations such as New Jersey and NYC gassing up their Volvo station wagons...Essex

Open in the Woods

I open carry in the woods. It keeps the freaks on their own side of the trail as well as the bears.

It's hilarious how I passed a hippy on the trail; he stood their, looked at me, looked at the Ruger .454 Casull on my hip, and back to me with a half grin. I just said "How's it going?" and moved on. I was chuckling over that for a while. :p

I've open carried before (in AZ). Most people act like they don't notice. Some do, and I got a few comments, but in general I went on with my trip without any negative encounter. Now, if I could CCW instead, that would definitely be my preferred method.

I wouldn't try it here even though it is legal (with a permit). Our permit system makes no distinction between open and concealed. Must have permit to be in posession outside your home or place of business.

Open when I'm out in the woods for any reason.

I have been tempted, however, to walk through U of U campus carrying openly, because there is a battle going on rightnow between the school and the state legislature over whether or not they must honor state law allowing carry, or they have a loftier 'academic discretion' which allows them to pick and choose which laws they will follow. The school has relendet for the time being, pending a higher court decision, but their interim 'rules' state that it MUST be concealed. But this rule only applies to faculty and students. I want to walk through, see if anyone says anything, to inform them that I am not a student, and state law, not school policy, applies to me.

Its funny that in Massachusetts it not illegal to open carry, at least there is no state law that restricts open carry. Some towns do have ordiances that ban open carry in public. In general it is not a good idea to open carry in public in most towns and cities Police officers do not know the gun laws, and probably will take the carrier as an armed suspect, who will end up being arrested for threatening with a weapon. It is ok to open carry when hunting on state land, with a valid hunting license, and carrying on your own property.

There are probably several answers to that question.
"Because a right unused is a right lost."
"It is the only legal way to be armed in this situation."
"I don't have a permit."
"I choose not to pay a fee to exercise my RTKBA."
"It's to hot to conceal."
"My pistol is to big to conceal comfortably."
"I can more effectively access my pistol."
"I believe open carry deters criminal activity."
"Being armed is nothing to be ashamed of, why hide it?"
"To change and improve the image of gun owners."

Here's another question, for those of you who do open carry, how do you answer when you are asked, "Why do you need to open carry?"

I usually answer that I don't need to justify exercising my rights, followed by (if I'm in a mood to humor them) one or two of the reasons longwatch listed.

People need to be reminded that, in a free society, people don't have to provide good reasons for their actions when their actions aren't harming anyone.

Open carry resources

I open carried in Colorado and Wyoming recently. It was thoroughly enjoyable.

I used the opencarry.org web site as my primary resource, but have also gotten the "travelers guide" which addresses open carry.

Note, there is some discrepancy between opencarry.org and the guide re: Utah.

Only in certain situations and circumstances.

It's completely legal here in AZ, but I think that CC is usually a better idea.

Here in southwest Georgia I open carry anywhere I can concealed carry depending on how the mood strikes me. The only problem is Georgia has so many restrictions on carry that there are many places I can't go....

It just depends on my mood and the weather....

I have found that even working outside around my place (or for someone else) that having a long tailed shirt untucked helps to protect and keep dust off of my carry gun. I hate having to dump sawdust out of my holster after cutting firewood ;)

I open carried into some stores in Billings last week and nobody said anything at all about it.

I go open while hunting, and concealed in town. Unless I am working, I don't worry much about printing or showing little, because ether way is legal . At work it must stay concealed. Can't scare the customers....Bosses orders!!
