Who is good for reloading supplies?

If you can't philosophically handle the prices at a LGS, you will probably do what the rest of us do, compare and shop on line for the best deal for what you want at a particular time.

If you can time it right, wait for the one penny Hazmat specials that come out around holidays. Next on is July 4th and there should be a lot of it being offered. Sit and figure out how much the actual cost is with shipping and price. I found that Brownell's with a $.01 Hazmat fee and Edge shipping $.00, more than offsets the dollar or two more they will charge per pound. As stated above, shipping is slow. It might be the first 40 miles or so for which it is rumored they still use 20 Mule Teams for the first leg. What they will do is take 3 days to process the order and print the label.

Ways to offset online shipping and HazMat fees is to order in larger quantities or do group buys.

When Cabela's sold primers at $19.99/1000 with free shipping, buying 10,000 reduced the HazMat fee to less than $3/1000. Even with shipping/HazMat fees split only 3 to 5 ways, amount of fees become negligible when you factor lower online pricing. If you do not know enough reloaders around you, you can post "Group Buy" at the range/clubs to find other reloaders or start a thread on THR "Groups Buys" category - https://www.thehighroad.org/index.php?forums/group-buys-deals-contests.43/

There first sticky message in the forum deals with the question of who sells reloading supplies.

I priced out Natchez, Midway, mid-South, Graf, and Precision when I did my last order of non-hazmat stuff. Natchez was the cheapest, Midway by far the most expensive. For powder and primers, I just get them in person from basspro; no tax in NH and no hazmat fee in person.

Basspro is about the only option local to me, but they want $40/pound for powder.

By the time you buy 3 lb. of powder there, you've pretty much paid for the hazmat and shipping from Powder Valley.
I bought 1 lb. of Unique about 3 or 4 yrs. ago from them. Price was $26 OTD. Shortly after that, Bass Pro jacked the $ way up.

Yes, if you buy even two pounds it's cheaper to buy it shipped from Cabelas, which is now owned by Bass Pro. I'm afraid the values at Cabelas are going to be affected over time by the merger.

Midway lowered their hazmat fee to $9.99. Their website didn’t say whether it was for a limited time so I would assume it might be their regular price from now on.
You can also get free shipping from time to time, including today. I am putting in an order for a few boxes of primers.

Who else is good to use?
Keep in mind that "when" is just as important as "who".

Reloading components are consumables with very long shelf life which means we can stock up when prices are low. Like monthly food budget, I set aside money each month so I can stock up when I see good deals/sales/promotions. My most recent purchase was several Bushnell Trophy 3-9x40mm scopes with lifetime warranty for $27 shipped after $50 MIR - https://www.thehighroad.org/index.p...nated-9-99-after-30-mir.836965/#post-10845880

Black Friday sales are annual cyclic event you can count on to save big (or buy more in my case ;)). Most vendors offer their highest discounts during Black Friday so having sufficient money saved up to stock up can translate to big savings. Many vendors also offer email notifications of their sales and promotions throughout the year, so signing up can translate to more savings.

Also, your best savings can come from buying in bulk. Rocky Mountain Reloading sells their 9mm 115 gr FMJ for $75.05/1000 shipped with 5% THR discount code thehighroad5 (+ THR ID in order comment box). With 4,000 quantity, price drops to $71.25/1000 (These are lead/coated lead bullet pricing!). And RMR often runs 10% sales so stocking up during promotions can drop the price of bullets even lower (They are currently running 10% off on 40/45/.223 caliber bullets and 20% off on .308 Lake City components) - https://www.thehighroad.org/index.p...ponents-on-sale.707473/page-165#post-10860841

Increasing number of shooting and reloading items are now being sold on Amazon and like Black Friday, Amazon runs "Prime Day" in the month of July every year (Last year was July 11th) along with "Lightning Deals" they run throughout the year - https://www.yahoo.com/news/amazon-3rd-annual-prime-day-162726233.html

In a Lightning Deal, I was able to buy a 25-75x70 spotting scope for $64 - https://www.thehighroad.org/index.php?threads/spotting-scope.837996/#post-10858147

If you are looking for 22LR, I maintain a thread for 500 rounds under $30 shipped and recently have been able to stock up around $18-$19/500 shipped for copper plated 36/38/40 gr HP/RN 22LR - https://www.thehighroad.org/index.p...30-for-500-rounds.825048/page-6#post-10860839

With components I have stocked up over the years, I am able to reload 9mm for around $5/50 to shoot in pistols and carbines but shooting $18/500 CPHP 22LR in my ARs with CMMG 22LR conversion kits definitely saves on .223 reloading costs :D.

Pay attention to the Where are there reloading components on sale? sticky thread at the top of the Handloading and Reloading forum. I have made several good buys when someone directed me to a sale. Most recent was 100 pieces of new Lapua brass in .260 Remington that I got for $88 delivered. I have developed a component inventory spreadsheet (bullets, primers, powder) that I try to keep current. When I see a good sale, I look at what's running low and try to stock up.

I take that a step further, when I see a good sale, I buy. I don't usually look at my inventory. I remember when reloading supplies were almost non-existent a few years ago. I'm slowly building it up, I think I have enough to last about 4 years now, at the rate I have been going.

Good plan as I have gone through several component shortages including the last "Great Component Shortage".

2017 was a great year as I have seen some of the lowest prices in recent years and I stocked up all year long especially during Black Friday sales to the tune of close to $10,000 (I am now stocking up for retirement years) but 2018 has been good too. I used to stock up for 2-3 years but now I am at 5-7+ years and stock up whenever I see low prices. You could say I maybe stocking up in excess but I remember buying Wolf primers from Powder Valley for $14 and now wish I had bought more. So I stocked up when Cabela's had S&B primers for $19.99 with free shipping (Currently $27.99). If they sell at $19.99 again, I will buy more.

Currently, component prices are not bad but as I have seen in past decades, things can change in a hurry and we could be back in another component shortage. During the shortage, I was happy to pay $5+ for 50 rounds of ANY 22LR ammo. So I am stocking up as much as I can on Walmart only Federal red box 36 gr CPHP at $19/550 which comes to $18/500, lowest price I have seen in many years. Why buy 22LR when I can reload 9mm for $5/50? When people join me to the shooting area, especially younger shooters, instead of shooting 10/22 Take Down, I hand them my ARs with CMMG 22LR kits and they get to enjoy the shooting of ARs without the recoil and noise.

As mentioned already, reloading components have very long shelf life and you won't go wrong buying at lower prices. I am still shooting bullets bought 20-25 years ago at nearly half the price they are selling now. 10 years from now, I am sure we'll be posting "Remember when Promo was $113/8lbs, S&B primers were $19.99/1000 and 115 gr FMJ were $71/1000?" and wishing we had bought more. ;)

You are right, bds, but I expect I'll have at least one more move to make before I settle in for retirement. I want to stay stocked, but shudder to think of moving $10,000 worth of reloading supplies! I do have a "2nd Amendment Fund” in the budget, though, that will help me stock up when that time comes.

Powder valley exclusively for powder and primers.

Diamond k for cases, as well as east coast reloading for cases.

For rifle cases, tx brass brothers, and Roberts and son

Roze distribution for zero bullets, which I use exclusively for pistol.

Midway for rifle bullets

Don't forget the Buy, Sell, & Trade Reloading subforum here. I have had around 10 or so transactions with several members here without a hitch. Mostly brass and bullets. You just have to check frequently, as some do go quickly.

Yes, the classifieds here and on other sites are good places to buy small lots of components (especially bullets) to test before you place an order for 100s or 1,000s of them. I also watch a local classified site for reloading components.
