Who loves the oddball chamberings?

Well, sometimes it's a plus...I have NEVER walked in and asked for a couple of boxes of ammo and had the person behind the counter say, "Don't have any, the Sherriff's Department bought all the .41 Magnum we had". Now, stocking up to shoot the 9mm around here can keep you driving from store to store for a while.

And "herohog", that has GOT to be one rare gun...I have been trying to find an AMT Automag in .30 carbine for a long time. At the moment, I can't remember ever even hearing of 9mm WinMag!

I have an odd obsession with collecting calibers in general, just like we all like to collect different guns, and I do especially like the more unusual calibers, but sadly, custom rifles are out of my price range, and I'm mainly into milsurps, so most of the unusual and wildcats are not something I can really do. I do have a Mauser 71/84 in 11.15x60 (sometimes called .43 Mauser), wich would be my most unusual to date. It is definitely a handload only proposition, as no one loads it currently, and "surplus" is 100+ year old collectors items, at about $5 a round :what:. I really like the oddity of it, plus it's a pretty big cartridge (my biggest currently), and the fact I load it with gen-u-ine blackpowder, adds to the "neat" factor. I'm sure the future holds many more somewhat unusual milsurps calibers like 7.5x55, 7.63 Argentine, .43 spanish, etc.

I hooked up a guy over on TFL with the only other one (AMT 9mm WinMag) I knew of... one of my old ones! I've seen a few .30's around on the web but they all start at $500 and go up from there. I managed to get 2 of the 9mm WinMags for $250 each 10 years or so years ago but those days are pretty much gone. Ya gotta like hand loading to shoot one of these babys!

9.3x62mm
6.5x55mm

When I get around to it, 8mm-'06. I've got a Turk Mauser with excessive headspace, and an itch to play with it.

I'd love to get into wildcats and weird chamberings. I have to get into the groove with reloading first before I start goofing with those though.

My thoughts on this are:

If you don't intend to shoot your oddball very much, then you're likely better off having someone else make your ammunition for you. Good reloading equipment is not that cheap, and some types of ammo require specialty dies that get pretty expensive, especially when it comes to case forming. Even if you already have reloading equipment, it might take several hundred rounds before your reloading of oddballs/obsolete rounds becomes anywhere near cost-effective.

Anyway, that's just the way I see it. That doesn't have to be the way you see it, however.

i really like them alot, not so much the old ones but more the new ones that have some sort of "improvment" over similar cartridges.

but i cant afford them as of right now, hell i cant even afford to shoot what i do have

30 remington.......30-30 cut for an autoloader is the best discription
25 remington.......same as above except necked down
32 remington.......same as above execpt necked up
50-90 sharps.........the dad of the 45-70(been thinking of necking it down to a .17 to compete with the .243-50 bmg):neener:

Also just for fun was thinking of taking a S&W500 mag and necking down to a 35 for a bolt gun

Unusual calibers I own:

Winchester '73 in 32-20
Winchester '94 in .32 Special
Marlin 1893 in .32 Rimfire
Star Super in 9mm Largo
Automag III in .30 Carbine

I love the .41 Magnum. I have always found it to be accurate and have plenty of power to do anything I've needed.

That being said, it's just hard to find ammo here on the east coast for .41. When you do find ammo it's more expensive than .44 Magnum, so I'll probably end up with another .44 when I'm ready to buy another big pistol.

Wow, no 35 Remington? That's mine, that and the 16 gauge.
Glad to see the other "Remington" cartridges (25,30, and 32 Remington) I don't have those...yet.

Guilty, to a fairly small extent. I get a *little ways* off the beaten path....

Rounds I have had before or still have guns in:

1. .400 Corbon
2. .22 Reed Express
3. 9.3x62mm
4. .35 Whelen
5. 6.5x55 swede (my buddy says this one is oddball, anyway - I disagree)
6. 10mm (not *that* odd really)
7. Milsurp rifle & pistol calibers (.303 brit, 8mm, 9mm makarov, 7.62x25mm, etc. - not all that odd either)
8. .45 cal muzzleloader

Currently I have plans to acquire:
1. 6.5-284 Norma
2. .338 Spectre
3. 6.5 Grendel
4. 9x23mm Winchester

6.5 Carcano - nobody in their right mind takes this one serious
6.5x.300 WSM - nice antelope gun
.260 Remington - not odd, but not many out there...
6.5x55 sm - not odd, but not very common

I have a thing for .264 bores... :D

Waddison

I saw where someone metioned the Ruger Blackhawk in .30 M1 carbine. I have one of those and it's my favorite pistol to shoot, very accurate. Only drawbacks are- too small for deer and muzzle blast is fierce.
