I have been doing a little reading up on the M1 Garand and I noticed on Wikipedia the production dates were from 1936 to present. Is someone out there making a NIB M1 Garand? I'm mostly just curious, I would probably rather have an old one anyway. It also said the service history was 1936 to present, who is still using it in service?

I am planning on getting my first Garand in a couple months, so I am pretty green. I will be buying my Garand from CMP here in AL, and I will be joining the Garand Collectors Association soon. A lot of my questions could probably be answered from reading a good book (or web site) on the M1 so I would be grateful for any recommendations, suggestions, or advice.

Thanks
DS.

I think Springfield Armory was selling brand new Garands in both 30-06 and 308 Winchester, but that was a couple of years ago. I haven't checked into that lately though.

Springfield did for a while, but not anymore. You can probably find one somewhere but you'll pay through the nose. Many of the parts are old GI surplus too, so it's not like it's fresh out of the factory.

CMP has a "Special Grade" that has reparkerized parts, some new parts, new wood, and a new barrel. I have one of those, and it's nice compromise between a new rifle and one with some history.

I haven't heard good things about newly manufactured Garands otherwise.

It's a tough market to get in to because a manufacturer has to compete with the CMP selling decent rifles for $500 to $600. That's a really tough price point to meet for a semiauto rifle. Especially since it isn't much harder to make an M14/M1A style semi-auto that has more demand and less competition.

Springfield used some new manufactured receivers with vintage USGI parts, so their builds were only sort of new at best. The Garand is simply too labor intensive to manufacture from scratch for profit today, even without the CMP undercutting the market.

It also said the service history was 1936 to present, who is still using it in service?

No one as an actual military service rifle, with the possible exception of some of the more completely screwed up corners of the Third World (in the 90s I can recall seeing news photos of local soldiers armed with Garands in both Haiti and Liberia). If they are referring to the US military, they must be counting parade and drill rifles, and possibly anything still used by .mil rifle teams for Service Rifle competitions.

All good advise above. Prolly best bang for the $, but a long wait if ya can't get to the store, is a CMP Special. New Wood New Barrel Re-Parked New Springs For $1000 Can't touch that deal through anyone else I'm aware of.

Thanks for the all the clarity, I am planing on getting the Special Grade from CMP, but I have been told they are not always available at the store so I might wind up getting a Service Grade and doing a little work to it.

I am also planning on putting an adjustable gas plug on it so I can shoot modern ammo, I know basically nothing about the djustable gas plug, but I will cross that bridge when I have the gun.

Just be aware that service grades are really never available in the north store so the south store is probably like that as well. Look on the Cmp forums.

You can also get great field grades at both stores too.

seems you can order special grades but they are not available in person. sad...

I got a special at the north store not long ago. They had about 8.

Col plink I'll get back to your other question about stocks today hopefully.

It's worth mentioning that the Springfield Armory making newer Garands has absolutely no relationship of any significance to the orginal Springfield Armory from years ago.

Well CMP is running out of rifles and is completely out of ammo ( yea we never thought it would happen) so that option is pretty much out.

They've been running out of rifles for the last five years, if you go back through old threads here and on other gun sites. If you're planning a Garand purchase in 2020, I probably wouldn't bet on CMP. If you're planning one in the next year or two, don't think there'll be any drama.

I got this Springfield Armory Service grade back in July. It was re-parkerized with all matching SA parts, and a nice new Birch stock installed by CMP.

In order to get it to group the way I wanted I did have to remove a little wood in the barrel channel on the stock, and do a trigger job.

Saw some real nice ones on the Aim Surplus site. I believe they say they're rebuilds with new barrels and new Boyd stocks. Might be worth a look.

There is a company called Miltech in California that rebuilds Garands to "NIB" condition. I can speak for their work: I just got my rifle back (Japanese T99 Arisaka) from them and it is impressive. The craftsmanship is very impressive and the people there were great to deal with.

Man, what a great group!

I have a special that I can shoot like that at 50 yds, but my skills and eyesight really makes them open up at 100yds.

Nice looking rifle and nice group. What was the distance?

Well let's see, it's the internet so................ about a thousand yards. :D

All joking aside, it was fifty yards. The day I shot that target I left my glasses at home and thats as far as I can see clearly without them.
