I just finished loading my first 1k of .45 and have shot about 500 of them with zero problems so I am ready to move on to some other things. I can get decent hp rounds for $20/100 (Hornady XTP)so at the very least this would seem to be a good opportunity to shoot a carry type ammo on a regular basis since this is substantially cheaper than buying this same ammo. I am a little nervous about being in a situation where I would need to fire and then having a failure due to a mistake I made while loading.Any recommendations on this particular bullet? ANy specific recommendations on reloading SD loads other than check and check again? Thanks.

Do you trust your life with homemade or factory rounds?

Handloading to get as close to spec. of the factory ammo makes for cheaper practice rounds. You definitely want to practice with them.

I bought Remington Golden Sabre 185gr +P BJHP. They came in box of 25 which is perfect for my Wilson Combat 8+1 mags(3). :)

But I practice with gamut.

Same here. I reload all my center fire ammo. and if I just happen to have it in my CCW when I need it, I'll have to use it. Been reloading since 1960 and haven't had one not to fire yet.

I use my own reloads for home defense. If I carried, I'd probably buy one box of commercial ammo that matches the reloads I practice with just for that. (158 grain lead .38 Specials, loaded right to the cusp between standard and +P).

Hey Hill Billy,

The only reason I shoot factory ammo is to get the brass I need to reload my own. My ammunition is far better than factory ammo, so I cannot imagine why I would want to use factory if I have my own available.

Best wishes,
Dave Wile

i can imagine several reasons, as ayoob has outlined them here in several exciting threads.

however, as my ammo is still better than factory ammo, they're risks i'm willing to take.

Everyone has a different opinion on this, but I simply don't buy into the whole increased liability with reloads argument. A good shoot is a good shoot no matter what is in the gun. I think that Ranger T's, factory loaded Gold Dot's ect. would be just as difficult to explain if one was faced with a DA that was determined enough to want to go after you for what was loaded in the gun when the shooting occured.

I use factory ammo in my daily carry guns, but a large portion of the ammo that I have stowed away for SHTF use consist of my reloads.

You'd also feel real bad about a FTF due to a manufacturing defect. Happens all the time. I trust my ammo 100%. Haven't shot any store-bought in a long time.

I also carry factory and store hand loads. I trust my loads as much or more than factory. I know there is a flash hole, how much powder, have inspected each of the components and was in control of the assembly process, factory ammunition is black box.

I'm not particularly worried about carrying hand loads but it is a potential fight I can avoid so I do.

Who reloads their own SD loads?

I do, cause they hit where I aim and they have always gone boom.

.......and on the eight day God created Gold Dots.;)
