Within the last year or two, there was a BATFE operation that slammed an FFL on the pretense that they were doing something illegal that involved 80% receivers.

Anyone remember the situation?

I'm doing some research and need to go back and find that story.

I've seen these 80% recievers before available here in canada. They were AR recievers that were 'unfinished', never seen anything like it before. They were made so that you can have a 'replica reciever' lol, but looking at it it just screamed 'grey area'.

I could easily see lots of people tempted to finish the recievers, its possible that these guys didn't do anything illegal, but just sold so many that were found 90% finished, or 100% in some cases and the legal system traced the parts back to this company?

anyone have the full story?

Brentn:
They're not for building a "replica reciever", in the US you're legally allowed to finish them into functioning weapons and the ATF Tech Branch has written several letters to that effect.

IIRC, KTOrdnance attracted ATF attention when they had "build your own" parties, everyone could come to their shop, buy whatever parts they wanted and use KT's machine shop to complete the final machining on the recievers. Sometimes this required only one press of the button on a CNC milling machine.

ianal afaik

they never claimed to be FFL's they were selling blocks of metal
that someone with a little knowledge could machine into a gun.

If you had the money and training you could set up a machine shop
and make your own guns.

I was wondering just the other day how (or if) that situation played out. Does anyone have an update on the status?

JasonblkZ06:
Correct, but the ATF considers a reciever to be 80% based on the amount of time/work it takes to make it a function firearm. Having a programmed CNC machine, a jig, and 80% recievers that fit that jig isnt quite the same as a person doing the same 80% reciever at home on a manual Harbor Freight minimill using skills he learned in 8th grade shop class. (<1hr vs 8-10hrs to complete)

Where does it say all that in the Second Amendment?

Exactly.

The best way to get rid of all this crap is to put folks in office who will cull these unconstitutional agencies and practices...

... sort of like that one Republican nominee that everyone seems to think can't win the nomination. The baby-doctor, that ten-year Texas Representative... whats'isname again?

Great, but that doesn't mean diddly to people who try to live in the current "Real World" and actually try to deal with the existing laws. :) You can scream about the 2nd Amendment and illegal laws all day long, but it doesn't mean anything until some courts or the Congress agree with you.

It seems like every single thread talking about these laws has someone bring this up. It really doesn't contribute anything to the conversation.
Newsflash: Most of us agree with you!! You aren't saying anything we didn't already know.

Oh well. I guess I'll stop ranting. :D Hope you have a great weekend.
