I have been hunting deer for 45 years and am approaching 100 deer harvested and I have killed exactly 2 that were over 100 yards, both were about 160 yards. I should explain I am a still hunter and hunt in thick woods where shots come quick and usually at very close range. I have probably killed half my deer at less that 30 yards. Started out with a 20 gauge Ithica Deerslayer. Now use mostly 35 caliber rifles. I also don't believe it is responsible or sporting to take shots at anything over 300 yards. 98% of hunters don't practice shooting at 100 yards enough let alone 500 yards. Just one hunters opinion.
I certainly know what you are talking about though. I have seen that kind of environment. The kind of place where you can set up a solid bench on a hill complete with sand bags and cold beer and watch the ball game while you shoot every once in awhile. I would find that boring as heck too. Those aren't my prairie dogs......
