I am pretty set on purchasing a savage Mark II bolt action .22, and have been looking at the different models, and was wondering what is the advantages of the heavy barrel? I plan on plinking with it, but accuracy is nice to have, and if it help significantly, I might wait until the extra funds are saved to get a heavy barrell.

thanks

You get better accuracy. Simillar to a thin tuning fork versus a thicker tuning fork.

Due to larger volumes you get lower levels of vibration, plus more consistency. If you can get a heavy barrell go for it. Worth the price..

more accurate and the point of balance is shifted forward, helping u keep the barrel on target, don't heat up as quickly (not really an issue with a .22 though)

Accuracy issues aside, some .22s tend to balance much better with the heavy barrel. I tried both versions of the Buckmark rifle, and the bull barrel felt better, so I went with that one. With the CZ 452 I went with the slightly slimmer profile barrel because that one felt better.

If you plan on doing any offhand shooting I think the balance is more important than the inherent accuracy of the barrel.

What waterhouse said, whichever feels more balanced to you.

Unless you're a really supernaturally good shooter, the usual differences in accuracy between one rifle and another (or one barrel and another) only matter on the bench.
