I am going to ask the question, and please bear in mind it is with the utmost respect for the moderators...

I hope everyone that participates in this thread keeps an open mind.

We are all here at the invitiation of the good folks that run this forum. I respect that. I consider one or two of the Mods good friends and would do nothing to disrespect them...

I am looking for an answer.

My question is: Why during an election cylcle, can we not discuss the political positions of the candidates, particularly in regards to gun control issues?

My gut feeling is that it is to much of an emotional discussion to be effectively moderated, and that this tests the frustration level of the good folks that run this board ~ and that they have to put this rule in place, for the sake of civility..

If so, is there a way to openly discuss the issues that many of us hold dear...without allowing PC to control the discussions?

Guess I'm frustrated that we, the gun community, are not able to stay focused on the candidates and effectively voice our concerns. And in doing so, bring forth a common voice that tells the rest of the world about our concerns.....We seem to be censoring ourselves.....with no help from the gun control groups:mad:

Again, please keep this discussion civil and consider the difficult job the forum moderators are placed in ~ when the topic is discussed...

Because there is a sister board called "Armed Polite Society" for politcs. There's a quick link in the top right of every page... "APS"

It's best to PM a mod and ask them instead of posting for all to see. Mods don't really like that.
Oh yeah, IBTL.

I'm guessing that our chosen topic of "firearms" is large and diverse enough to keep us and the moderators plenty busy and entertained, and there's no shortage of political forums, plus, politics, like religion has a real propensity for getting out of hand, often by-passing the original issue and turning into a heated and usually unproductive flame war. That my guess. :D

MIL-DOT and others,

Points well taken. Again it is a sad thing that we cannot figure a way to get a common message of unity across, regarding our positions on gun control issues....

Gizamo has asked a relevant question while taking great pains to emphasize that he respects both the rights of the site owner and the duties of the moderators. I am sure he is not alone in wondering why the position of our political candidates concerning gun control is not an item for discussion - as opposed to blatant politics.

I fully support present policy. The political views of many contributors are gut-level. ill thought out, rantings that add nothing to the forum.

Don't skip over what Rugerlvr said, there's a sister site that most of us visit, APS, that has plenty of this. Oleg and Derek set it up for just this kind of topic.

I don't get why it's such a big deal to just go post over there. It's nearly all the same people and there's pretty much nothing off limits politically over there.

Check it out.

I think that it would start with gun control and run off into too many other issues that some could be deeply devided as they try to plea the case for canidates.

I for one enjoy the fact that politics is verboten on this side of the wall. There's nothing like a quick political scrum to get folks' tempers rising; we've all seen it happen, more often than we'd like, no doubt. It seldom leads to anything good. Those who want to share and indulge and berate and shake their fist at the sky can to do with impunity on the sister site.

OK,

So now I am getting the drift. Take the discussion over to APS and that is a reasonable alternative to putting this kind of discussion up on the main board...

Seems pretty reasonable.

How about some kind of sticky to let newer members know about the policy?

Long story short:

For the same reason that a lot of households prohibit discussions of religion, politics and sports at the dinner table.

Because they inevitably degenerate into a caustic, pointless mess, and somewhere along the line, the roast hits the floor, and the dogs get it all.
