I've been thinking about buying either the Springfield XDsc or the Glock 26 for concealed carry. The one thing that turns me off about the XD is the weight. The XDsc weighs 26 ounces while the Glock 26 is only 20 ounces. The XD subcompact weighs more than a full size Glock 17! The slide on the XDsc and Glock 26 are the same length so why is the XD so heavy?

I'd take my digital gram scale to the gun store before I paid any real attention to published numbers. Strange things happen when you really look into things.

Sorry it's not a concrete answer; it's just the first question I would want answered.

You think an XD is heavy? Man, I feel old reading posts like this. I've been lugging around guns twice that weight most of my life.

Thats great Chuck, thanks!

Can anyone nip this in the bud by weighing an XD9sc and a Glock 26 with their magazines?

Glock claims the G26 weighs 19.75 oz. sans mag and ammo. That's close enough to be a draw.

I guess it's all relative...

Iff'n you think that XD is heavy, try a little regret.
Now THAT's heavy! ;)

XD, just as S&W, use full s/s magazines, whereas the Glock series uses the polymer and thin steel hybrid magazines. That's where those extra ounces come from when they are measured with magazines inserted.

According to Springfield's website, the XDsc weighs 26 ounces with an unloaded magazine. Since lighter is considered better for concealed carry, I highly doubt the Springfield would say it weighs more than it really does!

Unless you're 4'9" tall and weigh 105 pounds, what difference does 6 ounces make? I carry a 4" XD in .45 acp, with a full magazine, and it doesn't bother me at all. A good holster makes the difference between comfortable carry and uncomfortable carry.

But then, I've been carrying every day for over 43 years, too. My duty gun for years was a 6" Model 57 S&W, and I used to laugh when new cops complained about their sidearms being heavy.

Hope this helps.

I only worry about weight when I am wearing shorts with a drawstring, precluding a belt.

In such cases, a loaded Glock 27 is not too much, so I can't see an XDsc being much different.

XDs are actually pretty beefy guns for having a polymer frame. The slide is fatter than a comparable 9mm or .40 Glock, and actually the grip is too. The frame rails are even pretty thick. FWIW, I think they are tougher guns than Glocks, but you pay for it with the added weight.

I have both and don't notice it. Perhaps you are just experiencing the XD being a little top heavy as compared to the Glock.

i have been carrying and shooting both xd's and glocks for many years, and the xd isn't heavy to me. i love it, reliable, accurate, conceals well, and so much more.

I think the original question is asking "why are XD's heavier than other similar size polymer framed pistols", saying how light they "seem" to you is relative and doesn't help.

Is this the correct answer?
XD, just as S&W, use full s/s magazines, whereas the Glock series uses the polymer and thin steel hybrid magazines. That's where those extra ounces come from when they are measured with magazines inserted.

A side by side comparison of the XDsc and G26/27 would tell the story.

Look at the internals, the locking block, the thickness of the barrel, the steel guide rod vs. the plastic one, the beefier slide. The XD is built much more rugged than the Glock, but the Glock is lighter.

Both work, but I like the feel of the XD's better, and I shoot them much better than the Glocks I used to own.

I'll carry the extra ounces.

Funny,

I fell in love with the XD's so i was thinking of trading my glock 19 for the XD sub compact. I was going to go through with it till i realized that the XD was 6 oz. more than the 19.

I've mentioned this before on this forum. I love shooting XD better than Glock but not enough to trade in for extra weight

I'll weigh my XD9SC with the 13 round "shorty" magazine....BUT...it's going to have a Pearce +0 extension. Do you also want 1 in the chamber? I'll also have a Crimson Trace laser grip on it too, oh yeah, and TruGlo TFO sights...this would throw EVERYTHING off then, eh?

Maybe get one that just bare w/magazine...I might not be the best candidate.

6 oz. difference? I think my shoelaces weigh more than that.

Perhaps, if you do go with the xD instead of the Glock you should increase your exercise regimen and build up your strengh to compensate. Maybe bench-pressing a pillow or something would help. 10 reps, twice a day ought to do it.

Or, you could toss a couple of paperclips in your other pocket to help redistribute the excess weight.
