Why can't I find a gun case that doesn't scream GUN!

I'm looking for a plain soft rifle case that doesn't scream GUN! to everyone who sees it. You know what I am talking about, rows of mag pouches on the side, camo print, and a narrow end.

Anyone sell something plain?

If you're that worried about it I guess you could use a soft case meant for a bass guitar.

Take whatever case you buy, and put stickers from bands on it. Or stickers form any line of work that has nothing to do with firearms.

I bought one of those jumbo snowboard bags. It's about 68" long and wide enought to hold 4-5 rifles in their bags as well as my 2 small range bags / ammo and other accessories. It's mighty heavy when full but manageable and completely "un-gun".

Oddly enough, when checking my bags for a snowboarding trip, the airline employee looked at my snowboard bag and sternly asked, "Are you checking firearms in that bag??"

As you say, it looks *nothing* like a gun case, but I guess it still screams "guns!" to some people.

... baseball bags. Players use them for bats, etc. I use one for a Marlin that I call "Fungo".

It's not for rifles, but my "range bag" is a 1970's vintage Smith Corona typewriter case. Nobody's ever thought of guns when they saw it, they just thought I was Andy Rooney.

I put "Fender" and other musical mfg patches on my case and have never been asked - I tell people its my synth keyboard.

I use Pelican cases, which are mostly known for camera/electronics. They're waterproof, virtually indestructable, and have foam inserts that can be formed into just about any shape.

Look into SKB cases, when I see those I think of guitar case instead of a gun case.

Probably cuz my dad brought home a Limited Fender Strat Playboy Edition home in a SKB case.

Fishing compny stickers like Orvis and Mitchell work on hard cases, and I stenciled "Architetural Drawings", complete with mis-spelling and bogus company drawing numbers on it on one of my hardcases.

For soft cases I second the softball/baseball bag. It works for me until asked what position I play

photography tripod or light stand case

I use a padded photography tripod case. It fits quite well and is marked as a photography product. You can find them by numerous names.

For $17.95, Tiltall Tripod Case mfr# KH2785(R) but the 33" inside length will be a problem for many long guns unless you break it down.

For $49.95, 36.63" long inside Hakuba PSTC 300 Extra Large Pro Series Tripod Case - for Tripod up to 37" Long (Black) Mfr# PSTC300 but kind of looks like a rifle case though.

You can find larger ones for studio light stands like a $46.95, 45.63" long inside Hakuba PSTC 400 Pro Series Light Stand or Tripod Case - for Light Stands or a Tripod up to 46" Long (Black) Mfr# PSTC400

A camera around your neck will make the tripod case even more "invisible but in plain sight".

I've carried a rifle in a trombone case for a while. Hard cases for electric guitars provide more options, but you'll want to re-work the interior. I have a double pistol case I made out of a double clarinet case-- looks more like a laptop computer case.

There are several companies selling "road cases" for musical gear also, and many of them do custom work to order. They typically have plywood construction with a Formica-like outer veneer, full aluminum corner edging, full piano hinges and rugged draw-latches, and a firm, foam padded interior, which you can custom fit using a sharp knife. Very tough, and very much not gun-like. Anvil Cases was among the first in the business, but there several companies doing it nowdays. For a cheaper alternative, try AudioPile.

That's what I do. As some others here have suggested, I also put stickers on them that scream just about everything but "gun". Nobody has called me on it yet.

Well, okay, I have gotten a couple of funny looks from airline security/TSA types when checking the cases and declaring the contents, but it's not as if I'd been trying to waltz through the checkpoint with 'em.

It seems to me that anything that doesn't scream gun but can hold a rifle still screams "steal me!" Guitars and other instruments are just as easy to fence as a gun and sometimes bring similar prices, so I don't see using an instrument case to try and deter theft as working out too well.

I had used a generic guitar/ base case for a while....I worked well for one gun...I cut out the styrofoam (sp?) inserts, bought egg crates at the local art store and went on with my life...It word for a year or so, then started to warp. Best I can figure is that the plastic sides of the guitar case were VERY thin, and the original strofoam helped it keep it's shape and hardness...I dumped it and just bought a cheapo plastic rifle case...

Looking back, I should have just cut out what I needed and left the external space strofoam to keep the case a bit more ridgid.
