Why can't Smith & Wesson make a 637 in 9mm or .357?

They would have alot of demand for a gun like this. I understand the airlight frame will not stand up to .357. I wish there was something they could do about it though. I don't really like the Scandiums, they are ugly and have their own set of problems. And I understand they're touchy to clean especially around the cylinder. Stainless just seems more durable to me. And the 15oz chief special I handled was plenty light. Especially after owning a 3" Ruger SP-101.

Been looking at the 940's, but they are a tad bigger than I'd like and the prices for a 9mm if you can find it is nuts.

I really want a 15oz. stainless 637 in 9mm or .357!!!!!! :(

Does Smith have a custom shop? I think they do. Maybe I could special order a 9mm 940 if that's all they'll ever make. At least I could shoot really hot 9mm.

The 637 is not entirely made of stainless steel! Frame is still made from aluminum alloy. With the exception of the stainless cylinder vs. one made from titanium, the general construction of this gun is no different than a scandium gun.

Well, there is a difference between the two guns. Two hundred bucks. :neener:

I'd love to have one too. I passed up getting an original 940 when they were still out new.

FWIW.........Taurus has, or is coming out soon with, a 9mm snub nose.

Ya, I know. I used to have a Taurus Titanium. I'm VERY leary of owning one again. I'd much rather have a light stainless S&W j-frame.

Well this is a bummer.

I still want this in .357 or 9mm though!!!! With a shrouded hammer.

They made one 942 (a 642 type frame in 9mm). It is mentioned in the new issue a SW book whose author I can't recall.

I would like to have such a gun. Taurus is coming out with 9mm guns but I haven't seen a Centennial pattern.

I'm confused...

I tried calling Tuarus today for an answer, the rep did not know, so I left a message for an "engineer".
Here's my confusion:
If you look at the Taurus website for the 9mm revolvers, It says "9x21", now isn't that different than "9x19".?
and how do "stellar" clips work?
I would want a 9mm revolver.

dhoomonyou,

I went back and checked the descriptions again. Underneath the specifications column on the right they all say 9x19. And all but one of them in the description under the picture say 9mm (9x21). I can only guess that maybe they mean these revolvers are kinda like .357 revolvers, which can also use .38 Spl., in that they can shoot the longer 9x21 but also the 9x19.

They show two blued models (one with an exposed hammer and one with a bobbed hammer, both steel frames) and three stainless models (two like the blued models and one with an alloy frame with exposed hammer).

Here's the link, they are all down at the bottom of the page:

I don't know how that would be possible. If you put a 9X21 round in the chamber, the cylinder wouldn't close, since the 9X21 case is slightly longer.

Whereas with a .38/.357 the case length doesn't matter because the rim is at the end rather than the front.

Two words: moon clips. You could easily make a 9x19/9x21/9x23 revolver work fine that way.

Smith did that with the run of 356 TSW centennials. They could chamber that now defunct round or a standard 9mm.

I think SW could sell a bunch of 9mm Sc centennials with the 547 extractor. It would be a pricey gun though.

S&W has a scandium Bodyguard (mod 49) on the drawing board. I guess that would be a 249? 349? Anyway, it has been discussed that it be offered in 9mm. Now if they would just do it right by shortening the cylinder and setting the barrel back as when they built they 25-2 they will produce the perfect concealable firearm or backup gun. If you want to see this pistol call S&W and TELL THEM!!! It does help.

Oh, I thought it would fire 9mm also without moonclips like the Ruger. If it REQUIRES moonclips, then I could see how it might fire 9X21 & 9X23.
