Why Carry a Gun?

I get asked that, usually followed by the 'Are you trying to be a Policeman?' bit

I then ask if they have a Fire Extinguisher, the answer is usually yes, so i say 'Why, are you a firefighter?' and they say 'no, but just in case i need it' and Im like 'exactly!'

Nice!

"An unarmed man can only flee from evil, and evil is not overcome by fleeing from it."

Because calling 911 only assures that LE will arrive in time to write a report on who lived or died.

I once asked a deputy if he was worried about riding alone. He touched his mike and said: "All I have to do is radio for help.". Heck, a gunfight would be over before help arrived. He also showed, using me to demonstrate, take down techniques. He showed me one guaranteed to work. I said: "Try it again." and he couldn't take me down and I'm a thin guy!

I just don't understand people who really think the police will be there in time, so there is no need for a gun. I had a 12 hour ride-along with a deputy and I asked him if he kept a gun in his home for protection. He looked at me like I was crazy and he said: "I'm not going to have a gun around my family!" Go figure...

The issue, as seen from reading the many comments and quotes, is not whether guns can help save and/or protect oneself, others, protect against tyranny, is a protected right or granted right, can be exercised or shouldn't be exercised. The question is, why is our nation full of citizens that pursue apathetic attitudes towards self-governance and responsibility, and determine to remain dependent on handouts from the governnment? I'm sure most of you have heard by now the quotes about how no democracy has lasted more than 200 years because once the citizens realize they can become dependent on the government, they become apathetic and quit trying altogether. That is exactly what all the quotes and comments on THR describe when read en masse.

Why carry a gun? Because I'm responsible for my safety and well-being and the government is not. Because I was fortunate enough to be born in a country that, at least at one time, recognized certain liberties and freedoms as pre-existing any establishment. Because I, as a responsible citizen, recognize that my pre-existing rights must be exercised lest the devolution of society find fit to take my rights away.

What rideandcarry said...That was great...Well spoken! Welcome aboard, by the way, if you haven't been told that yet...

Actually, the Japanese DID invade America in WWII (part of Alaska). But invading the West Coast was something way, way beyond their capabilities. Even the few Alaskan islands they captured were too much and they withdrew.

For the same reason I keep a good spare tire in my vehicle. I never leave home expecting a blowout, but I think it's better to be prepared to change a flat, just in case. ;)

edit: I posted before seeing post #38.

Besides all the good reasons mentioned before (self defense, constitutional right, etc), I want to say that it just feels RIGHTEOUS to be armed. A warm and fuzzy feeling. :)

Invasion of the American mainland was much, much later in the playbook of world conquest. The Japanese only attacked Pearl Harbor because it stood in the way of their land grab attempts in the Pacific. They knew if they were going to conquer the world (or at least a major part of it) they needed a tremendous amount of resources that their overpopulated island nation could not provide.

And yeah, there's no way they ever would have taken the US mainland...but it's too bad we didn't just forfeit California back then and thank them for taking it off our hands :D
