Why do some use high power scopes for 22lr comps.

I have not got to the point. Where im comfortable playing with adjustments after i have a scope zeroed. I rely on the hold over marks. I know some folks don't like a busy reticle. I enjoy using them for their purpose.

You’ll enjoy using the turrets on your scope for their purpose too.

Dial your shots onto target, slip the turrets to zero the knob, set your zero stop, and crank up the volume!

Dialing turrets instead of holding in the reticle is especially pertinent with shooting “long range” with 22LR, since we drop out of the bottom of our reticle by 225-250yrds. I never like holding that low in the reticle if I can avoid it, and I REALLY like shooting 22LR past 250 - so I get those turrets buzzing!

When I have time, I prefer to dial. It takes all the estimation out of the equation as there s 10 "clicks" in each MIL graduation, the lowest my scopes reticles go to is .5Mil subtense. Holding a couple .1s between .5 subtense is certainly doable, but X.X MILs dialed in is about as precise as it gets.

Once I started spending enough to get a scope that'll ace a box and tall target test.
Zeroing the scope became a 2 or 3 shot ordeal then set the turrets to zero and spin away at least for elevation.

We have a .22 KYL match at the club once a month and that last swinger is 1/4" wide at 50yds. This is the second year of it and haven't joined in yet but always go to hang out and watch.

I have noticed that most guys that are regularly involved almost immediately made some major improvments in rifles and optics. The playing field is leveling out quickly!

NRA Smallbore Prone matches come in two flavors: iron sights and any sight. Depending on the venue, a match may involve 160 shots at 50 yds., 50 meters and 100 yards. The X-ring at 100 yards is one inch. championship matches may involve multiples of 160 shots.
The 2023 championship was won by Shane Banrhart with a score of 6391/6400 X 524x. Half shot Iron sight and half any sight.
Scopes can be found in the range of 15X-36X. One will often find quite a few vintage scopes like Unertl, Lyman Targetspot, etc.

For perspective...the National Record for this match (640 shots metallic/anysight) is 6400/6400 588X (Lones Wigger 1977)

I use a Leupold Marksman 3X9 on my Savage MKII. Its not really hi-power but some would say its unnecessary.

It has good light, and very clear lines. I use it at 50 yards.

I like seeing a target clearly even at relatively short ranges. Its makes 200 shot single hole groups fun.

The internet is full of people lying about how good they shoot -even right here- so a .30" hole in a 50 yard target with 200 round through it isn't impressive in internet fantasy, but in real life its fun.

I just received my KYL rack yesterday, bought it for NRL22 practice (and fun). That 1/4" target is going to be interesting. Hoping to break it in tomorrow morning.

One common denominator I see when I watch, most no one seems to know their limits! Bang-bang-bang-bang-bang ...miss... = 0 points.

The "hotshots" with a Vudoo fall for the same tactic of trying to outdo each other by sweeping the field, and lost to the one guy who hit the first 5 every time and stopped.

We shoot our KYL at 50-53 yards. About 75-80% of the shooters clean it.

However, it isnt a true KYL. We run it as a TYL. Once you miss you are done earning points instead of going to zero so new shooters dont get stomped on. But I also make the last two targets worth 2 points each.

We also have a TYL at 105 yards with 8 targets. You have 10 rounds to get 8 hits. Again letting people learn from hits and misses.

That's pretty cool, I'd do that. What's the 100yd? is that also .22?

Hope you have spare swingers or a welder, the small ones seem to not last long and get snapped off at the weld. No mass to absorb the energy is my guess. I'll have to remember to volunteer to weld them back together for them next time I go.

These actually bolt on, no weld, a pretty ingenious design really:

AR500, numerous positive reviews and the company sells replacement paddles.

Chuck, your amazon link doesn't work for me either.
Damn....

I dunno. I tried signing out of Amazon, just to check and it still works for me. Maybe I'm lucky, or un-lucky depending how you look at it.

Try this:

And he's having a sale today, $5.00 cheaper than Amazon!

All 3 of the Amazon links work for me. Just have to click on some active aspect of the ad box - the product photo, Amazon logo, “shop now,” or the blue product name text.

We run our TYL’s (no longer KYL’s) one of two ways - either hit-to-advance so when someone misses a target, they don’t have the increased burden to proceed smaller and smaller until they get back on target, OR as 2x through the array, big to small. In either scenario, all shooters get to engage the larger targets more than or as much as the smaller targets, and nobody gets stuck sending round after round into the dirt around the smallest target(s).

For a backyard plinker, however, the TYL rack holds up really well. For a high traffic range hosting monthly matches with 25-30 shooters, the little target gets a workout, and they don’t often hold up.

So, shot the KYL for the 1st time today at 55yds.

Cleaned it the 1st time through! prone, rear supported with a bag shooting Norma TAC22

Then things got back to normal and I often went through the 1st 6, or 7, then had reshoots on that ^%$& 1.4" TGT.

It might be slightly unrealistic to expect ammo that gets .4" at 50 to be consistent on a 1/4" target, but it sure a heck was fun. Then we went to shooting from the tank trap at 62 and 100 yards. That sucked way worse than the 1/4" KYL at 55..

Old Weaver fixed T36X scopes ruled @ my Club, if not wearing a Unertl 20 or 25X, at least on the ‘old school’ wooden stock Anschultz or Win 52 type match rifles.

With the advent of these newer Vudoo, RimX other high-end modified CZ yada 22LR bolt rifles for NRL, or Rimfire PRS competitions, etc., we are now seeing a ton of Nightforce or other $1-2K scopes on the line … or the Arken EP5 for the newbies/stock class guys like me, LOL.

Nah, give yourself credit for what you’re able to do with your rifle.

Gotta remember what group size really represents. If a rifle is printing true .4” groups, then there’s only ~.2” of air between the inside edges of the bullets, and a 1/4” target doesn’t fit in .2” - plus, over 95% of shots in a group will fall within the center 2/3 of the group, and the center 2/3 of a .4” group is only .267”, leaving only .043” between center edges - REALLY ain’t gonna sneak a .25” target through a 0.043” gap.

Wind accuracy, zero precision, and performance-on-the-clock are the enemies of the tiny target on the 22 TYL.
